ParticipantIndesit W123 washing machine has stopped functioning. I replaced the drain pump a few months ago, so it’s not that. If you select a programme, the red power light illuminates, then does 3 or 4 quick flashes and then remains on. There is a click (I usually select prog. 4) and a whirring sound, then after a few seconds, the dial just clicks round and round. I did manage to get some action once I put it on the rinse part of the programme (I switched off first before advancing dial), and so I know the water is coming in and being drained properly, but it didn’t do the final conditioner rinses and spin. Managed to get the clothes out OK! Is this a Timer Selector problem? I have tried it on other programs and still clicks round. Couldn’t find any help in the forums appropriate to my problem. Help!

When the knob starts to click round you need to count the number of flashes from the mains indicator light. It will flash a set number then pause and repeat.
This is an error code which we can try and interpret for you.
The dial will click right round once to the original setting, if you do not set it to one of the black dot, reset positions first then switch off & on.

Thanks for the reply.
Now, I started it on Programme 1, the mains indicator light came on, then there was a whir from somewhere inside (like a pump trying to activate), then a click (from inside?) then it clicked round as far as only programme 4 (not a complete cycle) with the mains light on continuously, no flashing.
I switched off again, isolated it, switched on at Programme 4, the light came on, did 3 or 4 quick flashes, there was a click from behind the panel (not the dial knob), and then no movement at all. Light stayed on.December 2, 2009 at 7:44 pm #305475Dales-Electronic

You have to set the machine off normally – when it develops a fault and the knob starts to click around – note the number of flashes.

Check motor carbon brushes. Door will lock and nothing else will happen if they’re worn out.
Power off first.

Hi Guys, thanks for the advice so far.
I have checked the carbon brushes and cleaned (gently) the comm. But how would I know if the brushes are working? They are not broken or cracked although I don’t know how much there should be left. It’s about 1/4 – 1/2″ poking out of the holder.
The switching on/off sequence to date is Power on, red light flashes twice, then 3 quick flashes, then stays on. Nothing else now moves although there is an audible click from somewhere (not the rotary dial).

New carbons are about 1.5″ in length. Worn out brushes will have one brush with the tip shiny and the other all dull and matt black – contact lost.

Will try a new set of brushes. It’s a cheap option at the moment. Thanks, will let you know how I get on.

Hi Penguin 45.
Thank you so much for your help. It WAS the brushes. Works perfectly except for a little noise like a wasp buzzing as the comm contacts the brushes. Spect this is just bedding in?
Thanks again, you’ve come up with the goods for me twice now.
