    just a quickie,

    does anyone know if on these, if the pump fails, it would trip on a property where the electrics were re-wired 2 years ago…

    tested all the usual bits and seems ok, but i know in hte past these pumps are prone to failures.

    symptoms – cust went out tripped during wash cycle.
    reset trip, w/m carried on and over filled.
    cust manually drained, and on wash cycle it fills, washes warm but wont drain
    nasty silverygrey oily water in sump.

    only asking if its a pump failure as it shows a current if you hook it up to the multimeter…

    If it’s the RCD tripping then the pump would not cause this as it has no earth.

    fair point actually 😉

    so pump might well be knackered anyway but its motor or timer board time then… ? if i knew before going out about the appliance tripping i would have left it, but just sounded like a blocked pump on the phone 🙁

    customer is on benefits and can only pay up to 70 quid to get it fixed so wanted to check here for a second opinion because i hate having to condemn machines as it is, but im not gonna spend more than an hour on it if general concensus is that itll be a write-off, and gut feeling that the customer will be “relaxed” about paying any call-out.

    Multimeter?….have you not tested it with your 500 volt insulation tester (aka Megger)?

    But do please tell me what the “current” reading from the pump was anyway?

    Me too, but before you go that far, how does the motor seem to you, does it megger up OK? Are there any signs of wear to the motor harness? Brushes OK are they? Heating element OK? All of the above are a real caution and need checking closely. 😉

    No because it never leaves our main engineer’s side… im out to this one because hes booked up to the weekend, and the customer was going to go elsewhere otherwise.

    sorry not current – you know what i mean if you connect a meter to both terminals, and turn a motors spindle you generate electricity. i cant give you a figure because it varied with how fast i spun it…

    as i said performed all basic checks – i.e blockages, carbons and wiring all checked ok, pressure chamber checked (due to overfilling), heater element ok for circuit, couldnt meggar it as you can guess, so could only check insulation between earth terminal and points. no oxidation on motor (at all!) to suggest water damage… anyway went for the jugular and dismantled timer cams to get access to board and found track to a 3 legged component blown right off (triac ?!)

    anyway stated replacing components would be more than half cost of new machine – board 75… trade and even a board repair would still end up being well over the repair threshold… and then wed have to fidn the component that caused it to fail
