KeymasterThis is probably an easy one for appliance repairers to answer! I’ve had a pressure switch hose blocked 3 times recently due to soap scum. I have now dealt with the hard water but want to remove the accumulated scum from the drum. Is there a product that will disolve it and not damage the machine?

I dont know of an easy instant fix for this but dont use liquid detergent as this only makes the problem worse. Powder or the hard tablets are best.

ParticipantBoil it out with a dash of bleach when you’ve caught up with laundry.

I advise that you carry out at least one boil wash program without any powder ect and nothing in the machine or just put your towels in but no powder once a week and this will go a long way to remove scum ect,Due to the use of ectra low temp washing and also the use of powders for coloured clothes ect machines are a breeding ground for bacteria ect.
Most powders and liquids no longer contain the same amount of bleach and phostphates ect as they used to which kills bacteria and removes some of the scale also.
40c is about the right temprature for the nasty bateria to breed and thats why you will get a lot of black mould inside soap dispensors now.

I’m gonna try at least 2 of these suggestions to clean it out. It should be the last time though because I fitted a softener as the water here is incredibly hard which has definitely caused such a big build up of scum in a short time.
The machine doesn’t stand idle for long enough for much bacteria build up but I see the logic because of using it on low temps for most of the time with modern fabrics!
So much for progress 😉

The low water levels used in most machines nowadays stop the top half of the tub from being washed clean every cycle, if your machine is very bad you can try adding hot water through the soap dispencer drawer until the water is seen on the glass then set machine for highest temperature wash it can do.
