Participantwe fitted a new belt to a wf series hotpoint aprox 6 months ago cust rang at the begining of december reporting that the machine wasnt pumping out i attended the call myself and diagnosed a blocked filter i was unwilling to complete the repair as only the young daughter was at home and she had no money to pay me i advised that if she rang we would be able to call the next day (a saturday)to complete the repair . The customer rang the next morning complaining that we had called and not repaired the machine, after we explained why ,we arranged to call to repair machine that day ,the cust was demanding a time but we stated that we were actualy full for the day but we would squeeze her in and she would have to bare with us ,my colegue arrived approx 2 hrs later was let in by the same daughter and set about removing the filter only to find it empty. At the same time our office received a call cancelling the call as she had managed to get another company to repair it sooner 👿 our engineer left slightly annoyed . A week went by when we received a call from the same customer stating that the drum wasnt turning we advised her to contact the last company who had repaired it .The customer rang the next day stating that the belt has snapped and it was under warranty and we would have to repair it free of charge :rolls: we explained although not impossible it was highly unlikely that the belt snapped it was more likely to have burnt through due to items being trapped in the drum (the reason we changed it in the first place )and we do not cover belts under a warranty for that reason , now after a long argument, a couple of letters received and replied to we now have trading standards ringing i presume for our version of events but as i use xmas as the time when i have a long break i have not yet spoken to them and they are ringing back next week. Just wanted a few opinions really as to how other people out there would have approached this .

I would have approached it the same way you have.
Customers, who needs them?
If you explain to Trading standards as clearly as you posted here then you should be fine.
Its often discussed on this site about last repairer is responsible for the machine. Even though your engineer took out the filter you didn’t actually charge the customer for that or the ‘wasted’ previous call.
Only in a mad world would TS side with the customer.

thanks for the reply tim what really annoys me with this paticular customer is that she bought this machine off me as a new graded appliance approx 2 years ago it came with our own 6 months warranty never had a prob during warranty period but had 3 problems since ,2 of which we did free of charge only charging for the last one .i suppose thats the problem the old saying if you give an inch they will take a mile comes into play here :rolls: cras

I dont guarantee belts, i also would check wether it had snapped through jamming as i couldnt acknowledge “wear and tear” so soon after a new one had been fitted.
Why did the old one snap anyway????
Cannot STAND customers who “DO NOT HAVE ANY MONEY TO PAY” on first visit as MOST repairs are fixed on first visit anyhow.By not having any money or leaving any to pay you tells the full story to be honest…..
cheeeky bastids.
anyhow…its happened to me a good few times but i dont stand for it, the last time it happened i threw the customer and the baby in the van and took them the cash point, dropped them back at home afterwoods ofcourse. 😉

yes i always give a price and ascertain wether they have the means to pay, i was well aware that on the day i arrived she was missing for obvious reasons, hence her snotty atitude the following morning . I have told her that i am unwilling to do any more on her machine in future, quite honestly she s been a pain in the rear ever since her first problem . Her letters are good for a laugh though the last one stated TS say that if i dont replace the belt we are going to be forced to provide her with a new machine 😆

Just inform her any further letters are to be sent direct to your solicitors and give her the address.
Keep TS in the loop, but also inform them your solicitor will deal with any legal threats etc etc.
Also inform her that you will seek reimbursement for all costs.
Usually stops the silly threats and makes TS think twice. 😉

Send her a bill for the wasted call-out to the filter.
