ParticipantMy Candy Aquaviva 1300 was refusing to spin/turn, and I diagnosed as worn out brushes – they were badly arcing.
I’ve replaced the motor brushes, and torque from the motor seems good. THIS IS MY FIRST ATTEMPT AT THIS PARTICULAR DIY FIX.
The motor now seems to give off an intermittent high-pitched squeeling, which varies with RPM.
Any ideas?

forgot to say, drum spins fine and freely – bearings here fine.

If the motor is squealing then the motor bearings are failing. This is not the same as the drum bearing. You cannot renew these; it’s a new motor I’m afraid. 😥
Word of warning – Do Not under any circumstances attempt to lubricate the motor bearings with any spray oil, chain lube or WD40 – these lubricants are volatile and highly flammable so it is possible the sparks from the brushes could cause a fire. If the motor runs to spin speed and it is very noisy without the belt on then it is finished. New motors are expensive……Candy’s are not……. 😉
HTH,
Steve.

Thanks for the diagnostic, but I’m not sure it is the motor bearings. The motor was dead quiet before I changed the brushes… (just wasn’t very powerful!)
If I power the machine down, and reach inside and root around/wiggle the brushes, then fire up, I can stop the noise – so it’s definitely only intermittent.
Could I have fitted the brushes backwards or something – or perhaps the shaft of the motor is pitted? (or some foreign matter is trapped in there)
The sound is not really a squeal, it’s more of a scratching/squeeking..? Sorry, impossible to describe this over the ‘net I know!
Cheers

Right, it’s probably the new brushes sounding rough on a pitted commutator. Not uncommon when old brushes are worn out completely. Take the motor out and look at the orientation of the brushes; they should have the angled edge flat against the armature surface. If there is a lot of clicking when the motor is turned by hand the brushes may need loosening and moving slightly to stop the noise. Make sure they are fully tightened when satisfied. Don’t clean the commutator with abrasive paper or wet’n’dry as it can ruin the armature.
Reinstall the motor and run it up. If the clicking is reduced, then do a wash and then listen for the final spin. If the noises are less, then it should be OK. The brushes, like new car brake pads, need to ‘bed in’ to the new surface – this can take several washes and most motors are fine. But if the motor is rough on spin and sparking badly, then the motor is duff.
Hopefully it will be fine.Steve.
