    My Hoover HNWL 7166 washer/drier is misbehaving in a strange manner. It’s not that it doesn’t work, it’s just that it doesn’t seem to do what I want it to. I strongly suspect that the selector control knob is not properly gripping the shaft of the switch and the selected program is not always the one the knob is pointing at. And it feels wrong. (I had a similar problem once on a dishwasher; it felt much the same way)

    A new knob is only about a tenner from eSpares (you don’t seem to carry it here) so I’m tempted to get one. BUt I don’t know how to remove the old one and fit the new. Is it just a pull off/press on, or do I have to partially dismantle the thing to get to a grub screw? Come to that, could it just be a loose grub screw?

    sorry to say its a common complaint

    After I posted the query I decided to experiment. I went into the kitchen and yanked at the knob with mole grips. It came off easily, but turning the shaft directly didn’t solve the problem. So I surmised that it was, in fact, the selector. Glad to hear I may have guessed right.

    New selector is on order. (From eSpares. Sorry; didn’t spot it in the site here)

    A related query:

    Presumably to fit the new selector switch, I’ll have to take the top off the machine. Now, when I was searching the forum for information, I found that other people have had trouble with clogged condenser tubes on other HNWL washer/driers. Assuming that the 7166 is similar, is it a good idea to have a look and clear the tube out as a precaution while I have it apart?

    So I’ve fitted a new selector, and as far as I can tell so far, it’s done the job. The machine appears to be running the programme I actually selected.

    But what puzzles me is this. It’s a 22 position selector switch but there are only four or five wires going to it. How does it work? Anyone know?

    its a digital switch/potentiometer

    the main plug is just power, the smaller idc cable is the one used for selections .. different resistance=different program

    pull your old one apart and youll see what i mean

    And now, I’ve had to do it again, only six month or so after the last time.

    Helo_75 said it was a comon fault on this model, but every six months seems a bit frequent. Is there a cause I can fix or do I just have to resign myself to spending a tenner twice a year?

    nah, it wont cost u a tenner a year!

    it will probably cost you a lot more, when the weight drops off or the motor blows up

    still, itll be cheaper than the later ones where the switch is integrated onto the main pcb

    oh the joys of modern technology eh!
