ParticipantHi All,
I have a 1200 Exxcel Washer WF02465gb/01 made in June 2003, that won’t spin, it drains normally, having had similar problem 18 months ago i suspected, it would be the brushes again, however, i thought this was a little premature as the Bosch originals had done 5 years trouble free.
So i removed the motor and took out the brushes, whilst not at the end of their life between 6 & 7 mm left as i had a new spare set, i thought i change them anyway.
Nice sliding fit and i’ve removed all the carbon dust.
However, now the motor won’t turn at all, prior, to me removing the motor, it would wash and rinse, drain, but not spin, now it won’t turn at all.
I’ve had the motor off again and rechecked the brushes for seating agains the comutator and they are 2.7 ohms across the brushes.
I also checked the other resistances on the bench before re-fitting again
wth the spade terminals facing me
Pins
2 – 3 1.6 ohms
4 – 5 2.7 ohms
6 – 7 15.4 ohmsThe machine will take in water and and it will pump out normally on the drain or spin cycle, the 11 minute countdown goes to 10 before ending at 01 releases the door interlock and then finishes at 0.
Is there anything else to check, as the motor was working, but would not spin, now it won’t do anything.
Am i looking at a new motor or controller ? although looking on here, it sounds as though it not worth changing the controller and with motors anything upto £150, is it worth doing this on a 7 year old machine ?
All advice gratefully received
Thanks
Andy

Bosch motors have a nasty habit of failing when carbon brushes are fitted.
Place ohm meter on each carbon, is there a responce ? if so, check the inbuilt NTC (Built-in temperature safety). You can do this by metering the wires at the carbons and the connector on the motor.
Also try removing the carbons, lightly wiping the ends with wet n` dry paper, also the commutator (the round copper contacts inside the motor.
MAKE SURE you do this safetly, unplug and remove the motor.
If you get it working make sure you give the machine LIGHT duties for atleast a week, allowing 30 min between washes to allow the motor to cool down.
If none of the above works, call an engineer (see UKWhitegoods Repairs)
SAFETY FIRST !!

Hi Beta,
Thanks, for your words of wisdom.
I was convinced that the brushes were fitted correctly, and that proved to be the case, as a last ditch go at the “B*****d” tonight revealed the true problem.
When i disconnected the 6 pin plug from the motor prior to removal of the motor to check the brushes, which as i mentioned earlier were not worn out, i felt that the two half of the multiplug were loose, however, i ignored this fact until this evening.
I was annoyed that i couldn’t easily get the multimeter probes on terminals, without getting under the machine to measure voltage at the motor, and the controller end is nearly impossible as well, so i had decided to wire some male spades to connect directly to the multiplug with some long leads into a terminal block to pass outside under the machine in lieu of the motor.
anyway closer inspection revealed with a slight tug on pin 4 wire it came away from the multiplug all together.so basically i suspect from the start of my woes, it was a poor connection and not the brushes
Anyway, having pulled the multiplug apart, it reveals what a poor piece of design this item is, it looks to me as there is a real chance in manufacture for the internal prongs of one half of the multiplug not to pierce the outer insulation of any of the six wires sufficiently to guarantee a decent contact and over time as in my case not to make contact at all.
Incidentally, there was no burning or scorching on the internals of the multiplug, if i knew how to post a photo on here, i could show everyone on here what the inside of this multiplug looks like.
I’ve now done away with the multiplug and replaced with insulated spade crimps, and my machine is now doing its first wash as we speak.
I wonder how many other similar machines have been binned, i was very close myself, with suspected motor and or controller faults and the problem may have been in the multiplug connector
I would like to say, prior to the the brushes 18 month ago and since this machine has been faultless, with no maintenace at all, other than monthly cleaning 90C washes with Washing soda.
Has anyone else out there had a similar experiance with the motor multiplug on Bosch washers ?.
Cheers
Andy
Edit. its completed wash no 1, and now on to this weeks whites, wish me luck

Participantnope, not a one
i always fix bosch machines
they are far from hotpoint standards

Participantdid you remove the plug from the motor when you changed the first set of brushes ? The cable loom would have been cable-tied to a small bracket on the bottom edge of the motor. If you don’t fit another cable tie to secure the loom adjacent to the motor plug , the excess vibration can , in a very small minority of cases , cause a problem with a cable working loose from the plug itself.

Yes,
18 months ago, I removed the whole motor from the machine.
I re-fitted the cable tie as per originally along with the clear plastic moisture shield thingy.
Now of course, it could have been that the first brush change was sufficent to disturb the wiring inside the multiplug connector.
So its just a cuationary tale, in my case, this multiplug and wiring is not as robust as it could be.
The whole design of the motor wiring, from controller to motor, doesn’t make it easy for fault diagnosis, as you can’t get a probe from the meter anywhere close to a terminal, but i suppose, its all designed for ease of assembly in the factory and not subsequent fault finding.
My machine has now completed 3 washes, so i think i’m fixed
Cheers
Andy

I`m glad you managed to sort out your machine.
Remember – light duties. Happy washing !
