Our Hotpoint dryer has developed an intermittent fault. It will suddenly stop mid cycle for no apparent reason. It isnt a full water tray and the filters are clean. The Active and Drying lights remain lit…but it just stops.

This happens when the clothes are still damp. It may start turning again for a few revolutions and then stop again. The machine sounds as if something is rubbing inside though – i’m wondering if bearings are going somehere?

The dryer is a good few years old now – and i’m reluctant to spend much money on it – although it has given us good service to date – with a few ‘stats replaced along the way!

Any suggestions as to the cause or a solution?

The bearings etc are not very expensive but don’t cause to many problems on these machines with jockey pulleys instead of the later ultra tight ‘stretchy’ belts.

The rear bearing can be checked by removing the small centre cap at the back.

The front bearings are just four simple pads that can wear away and cause the drum to bind.

Unplug and remove the top and see if the drum will revolve freely, it will not spin but it shouldn’t need a great deal of force to turn it.

It could be a failing motor capacitor but that wouldn’t cause a rubbing noise.

Again a capacitor is very cheap if needed.

The only expensive bit on these is the control PCB.

I’m thinking that because we’ve had this for some years now that we should be replacing it rather thatn forking out on potentialy expensive repairs. Is it worth reparing this do you think?

We are looking at the ISE condensing dryer – but i’ve noticed that it is only a C rated machine – how does thsi compare with competitir machines in reality?

    Some relevant points HERE

The gist of it is that any dryer that claims A or B rating is likely to be either very expensive and complex or take a very long time to dry the clothes.

Thanks for the tips. We’re now down to the ‘should we even have a Tumble dryer ? ‘ debate.

….we may still end up with an ISE to go with our ISE washing machine !

Re: Hotpoint Ultima TDC62 – Dryer stops mid cycle

So I’m back, still trying to get to the root cause of the dryer stopping intermittently.

I think the last post was rather side tracked with discussions about the rubbing noise, but I dont think that is the issue I need to resolve just now.

We’ve replaced the rear stats, as these had blown because the machine stopped half way through a drying cycle, I’ve also tried to get at the front stat too – but that seems impossible to get at without dismantling the whole machine ( OK slight exageration – but its not looking like a DIY job).

So what other options do I have? I’ve seen other posts about dryness modules, comments made about failing motor capacitiors – all of which I’m willing to look at – but I could do with some info on where these components are in the box, any tests I could apply to check them out and/or any other suggestions at to what coudl be causing this machine to cut out mid-cycle.

    Thanks & Happy Easter !

Hello Guys – you might think this is a dead thread … but having returned from holiday with 3 kids’ worth of washing to do & no way of getting it dried quickly – I’m under pressure to find a solution.

Any advice on my previous questions gratefully received.

    Thanks
