ParticipantMy machine recently developed what I can only describe as a grating noise, particularly during the spin cycle. The machine now won’t engage the spin cycle at all.
From reading the Haynes washing machine manual, it suggested the door switch or pump. From reading the forums it could be a capacitor or module.
I’ve recently changed the switch so am not sure that is the fault. For the others could anyone suggest where to start ?

Noisy drum & no spin is nothing to do with door switch or pump. Its either the drum or motor bearings, motor brushes, belt, drum support or something stuck in the drum.

Dumb question here, how do I remove the drum ?
I tried following instructions in a Haynes manual but they don’t appear to work for my model/machine as there doesn’t appear to be any catches holding the front of the exterior in place. As the back recess is too small the only thing I can think of is to lift the everything (including the heavy lower concrete block) straight up out the top having removed the air dampers and various connections first.
Is this right or am I missing something obvious ?

If you buy a Haynes manual to fix your car you will buy a make and model specific manual.
the Haynes washing machine manual is basically a useful guide. It is no use at all for specific repairs on many hundreds of different makes and models of washing machine.
The Electra machine was made for the old Electricity boards by at least seven or more totally different manufacturers. Some of these going back well over 30 years now. I am familiar with the ones made by Zanussi, Hoover, Creda/Hotpoint but have very little knowledge of the ones made by Candy, Whirlpool/Philips, and the others that I don’t even know about.
I do not know who made your machine, looking at the model number I would guess at Philips/Whirpool or possibly even a Servis :rolls: but I could be completely wrong.
Hopefully one of the lads who does know what this actually is will be able to help.
TBH you may find that you are throwing good money after bad, I would guess that it is a little more than the seven years you think it is, it may be getting to the end of its useful life. 😥January 31, 2010 at 1:04 am #310058Penguin45

Merloni-built machine – back panel of drum is removed by undoing the clamp band at the back. Make a note of all the wiring – we can’t help you if you get this wrong.
Bearing set is HERE if required.

Thanks Penguin45, I’d got that far the problem is how to remove the outer tub unit from main shell of the appliance. It won’t just slide out backwards as the diameter is too large for the rear opening.
I removed the pipes and electrical cables to see if the combined innards (tub unit, motor and lower concrete block) could be pulled up through the top however I must be doing something wrong as the centre of the drum (where the bearing and fixing screw thread) is catching the shell even with the front panel removed.

The back panel will come through. You need to twist and get one edge through, push the drum down for the top to go through, then wiggle it all across for the other edge of the back plate to pop out.
It will come out – done loads over the years.

Thanks Penguin45, eventually got it out. 🙂
Both drum bearings are showing rust with the front one having siezed up. Brute force got them out and new ones ordered from my friendly helpful parts supplier.
As the whole thing is in bits I thought I should at least check the motor. Having separated the motor into the two parts, the bearings look ok with no obvious sign of wear but I can’t seem to find where the brushes are.
Having replaced similar on a Kenwood mixer, they were easily visible but I can’t seem them on this motor.
Am I really dense in not seeing them or does this motor not have brushes ?

Induction capacitor start/run motor – no brushes on this one.
