ParticipantHi
Please beware of certain pattern spares suppliers selling replacement belts “To Fit” the likes of Zanussi, Candy and Hoover Machines.
With most modern machines that have ‘stretch’ belts with no adjustment required, it is vital that a “Mael” type of belt is fitted. Those belts that share identical size markings will be even more difficult to fit and in a short while of use the motor drive pulley will overheat and snap off with the strain.
Mael type belts are slightly thinner and have MAEL stamped on them in all cases.

ParticipantRe: MAEL Drive Belts caution!
It is so easy to fall into this trap as I did with a replacement ‘Invicta’ Brand(Washvac) belt a year or more back. They listed a pattern equivalent for a Hoover belt they were out of stock of the genuine. I fitted this belt and 2 weeks later the bl**dy motor shaft snapped clean off. It was only then that I found out it was an ordinary belt and not a stretch one, they in fact had no business in supplying me in the first place. When I pointed out to them that it had ruined a perfectly good motor, they didn’t want to know!!!!!!!!!
Since that time I realise now that the “Rule of Thumb” in ALL cases, is that if the machine has a motor with no belt tension adjustment on it, that means it uses a S-T-R-E-T-C-H belt and no other should be fitted (even if it has the same size markings on it (i.e. 1180J5). Lots of them do have MAEL stamped on them but the likes of Bosch Belts do not so be careful.
I agree with 13amp in that these belts are generally thinner in appearance too!

ParticipantWent to the unfortunate Mrs Davidson on Wednesday; the disillusioned owner of a W103. Hubby went to a shop in town and bought a new drive belt 10 days ago and fitted it. I went out for the leak……. caused by the non-elastic belt breaking all the legs of the pulley, which, while disintegrating, sawed through the back of the tank! Oddly enough, the belt was still on and the pulley still drove the drum. Weird …………
