ParticipantHi,
ongoing saga but started this one as it is the correct model.
Customer blew up the motor changing the brushes and now has replacement but….old motor has yellow socket with 2+4 connectors and his replacement has a white socket with 7 tags, one unused. Can it be modified to fit?
Thanks

Are both sockets flat, in line sockets, either 6 or seven connections as opposed to the much older double deck 3+3 motor plug.
It is possible to fit the six pin plug to the seven pin motor. you may have to snip off one or two of the lugs and turn the motor plug through 180°.
Identify which two connections on the new motor are from the tacho then make sure that the two wires that went to the tacho on the old motor line up with them, thats assuming you still have the old motor to check on.
New motor must not have a screw sticking out of the tacho end.

Thanks Jim,
They are both the old GEC type motors and the sockets are both in line flat and both in front of me now but not the machine. Will I still have to turn the connector though 180 or just rearrange the wires in the old connector block to line up with the tags in the new motor?
Thanks for the tech info too 🙂

WM52 should be using a Rast type motor plug: they have six or seven tags and the wires that come out the side of the plug. They have a Pin 1 indication marker above the position where the first wire goes in (right of the plug, IIRC). WM52 motors should be the 415 tacho type with the little metal ‘cross bar’ over the tacho coil. The wiring in the socket is (from the right to left):-
Far right tag – tacho
2nd – tacho
3rd – field
4th – field
5th – brush
6th – brush
7th – half winding for 1200 spin boost. If you’ve done an armature change and the motor still doesn’t work, check the wires from the motor socket to the brush terminal for continuity. If one lead is O/C, then the coil TOC has popped. (I think Qualtex still do replacements, or I’ve got some spare ones).
Hope that helps,
Steve.

RobI thought you were still talking about an FHP motor replacement. 😳
No you don’t have to reverse the plug from one GDA motor to another, you can just plug it in as long as it is a digital motor. Two types of tacho/magnet used on the GDA/GEC digital motors the later one Steve mentions above with the tacho magnet screwed directly onto the motor shaft with no plastic washers on either side and the small bar over the tacho.
The other digital one has the old type larger tacho and a tacho magnet that has the plastic washers. The tacho magnet on this type of motor is much thicker than the one for the earlier, analogue controlled machines.

Both the old and replacement motors have the tacho with the bar, just different tag numbers and spacing in the socket so it should be plain sailing

For future reference. 😉
The first one on the left is an analogue controlled motor tacho magnet.
Second one is an early digital type with the larger tacho coil and the last one is the later magnet which is the one you should have on both motors. The two types of digital motor are interchangable.

Just come across this table on a retail spares site. Could be of use someday.

Think it is a DNS problem, possibly not in the Ntl cache, will flush my DNS cache and try again.
EDIT. Working now. 😀
