ParticipantCustomer is very pleased with her 10 but she has called me out to investigate why the heating element is so noisy when on.
It’s a bit like a metal kettle boiling it’s nuts off!!
Any suggestions??

KeymasterNothing wrong most likely as you can hear them since it’s a stainless outer tank and there’s really not much you can do about it.
You have to laugh at how picky some people are though. :rolls:

That’s exactly what i told her!!
But she claims it has only just started doing it(she has had machine for 8 months)

KeymasterIt’s all in her head I expect. 😉

I expect that what she has been doing of late is
Not putting enough load into machine thus resulting in more of sound.

assume you have checked its not down to earth?

No Mark i have not,Can you please explain why an element down to earth would make that noise when it heats ok :con:
Cheers Dave

yep, had it plenty of times, admitedly not for a long time and I guess it would have to be in a house with fuses rather than trips but it was a common occurance, very loud “kettle boil” noise when heating, megger the heater- always down to earth. Would be unlikely on the ISE 10 but worth a shot at least as I have never heard one heating up at all and that includes the one in my kitchen. Have you checked it is heating or just heard the noise and assumed? There is not a no heat error code on those and the program will still proceed to the end.

Dave are you in a hardwater area?
If the element is scaled up it can make more noise.
Regarding element down to earth, it can make a noise due to the earth acting as a neutral. So depends on consumer unit fitted, if the house has an older system it would not necessary blow trip as a result, you just hear the heater louder than normal.

If the element went to earth you should get a fault code reported. The circuit would be wrong and the electronics should pick that up. And, as Mark says, if it’s on an RCD or MCB it’d pop the trip as soon as the element was energised.
I’ve never heard of additional noise due to scaling but then, it’s not a problem we have round here, very soft water. But I wouldn’t have thought that any of the 10’s were old enough to have a degree of scaling that’d be causing an issue.

Dave, remember the baffles are easily removable on the 10’s so heater inspection for scale is easy. I live in a very hard water area and have not had a problem.
Have only had open circuit heater failures and they did not show a error code.February 18, 2010 at 8:55 am #311819kladave
ParticipantRe: ISE 10 Heater (UPDATE)
Thanks for all your input. The machine is heating ok but next time i’m in her neck of the woods i will check the heater is not down to earth.

ParticipantRe: ISE 10 Heater UPDATE
Have been back to machine today and can report that the heater is not down to earth but the element was scaled up considering it was only 7 months old.Told her to use calgon in future.

Our area is quite hard water, Never drink the stuff just from the tap these days the amount of chlorine it tastes discusting :rolls:
You can usually tell when the kettles gets scaled up they makes a vibrating noise and shake violantly on work surface as the bubbles from the element try and get through the scale.
Theres probably a technical term something to do with molecules and all that.Tell them to descale every month washing machine cleaner, I dont think calgon does any good if the area is Hard.
