ParticipantGuys – still trawling the forum for clues but no joy yet. Here’s the story:
Weight on the drum of my 8 yr old machine disintegrated (very unbalanced load of towels the culprit, or the final straw anyway), I stopped the machine fairly promptly but distinct overheating smell somewhere. Was leaving for the weekend, so no investigation at the time to find where the overheat was.
Had a good look today and removed all the powder and chunky residue from the (3 hole) weight that fell off. Have ordered a replacement (2 hole version now apparently?)
Machine appears to allow full programming and starts programmes and skips through on request however, the motor is not turning at all (during the wash cycle or when skipped to spin). The motor is free to turn as it turns easily (and with no noticeable grinding noise) by hand.
Is there a fuse somewhere that could have burnt out, or is it worth dismantling the motor (help or guidance on this would be appreciated!)

ParticipantUpdate and (lack of) progress
OK, some searching on here and I’ve tried:
1 – Removed motor and definitely running free, removed brushes and still spring out approx half an inch (am assuming that means plenty of life still?)
2 – Tried a few programmes, they start OK and fill with water then nothing, skip to spin cycle it drains OK then nothing. Also dryer only function does nothing. No motor movement at all, not even a twitch
3 – Entered diagnostic mode (power on with start and reset button pressed), cycle to 40 degree light on and it shows E52, which I think is motor, motor wiring or PCB? During the few minutes of (careful) button pressing in diagnostic mode I noticed that the Dryer heating element started getting hot and smoked a bit. Very similar smell to the original weight disintegration problem, this couldn’t bear any relevance to the motor not working problem could it?
4 – Removed and inspected the PCB, large patch of carbon deposit around a small area in the centre of the board near the copper coil inductor/transormer thing, but all the tracks look OK and no obvious component has exploded!
I get the feeling it’s engineer time, unless anyone has a nugget of wisdom to throw my way!

You should check the tacho coil is o.k.-
Two wires run to the end opposite the belt , check for continuity and make sure everything is tight ….February 18, 2010 at 1:28 am #312172schmooser

Thanks for that, tacho checked already, since my last post got my local guy to look at the motor and connections with multimeter. Looks like the PCB is knackered,

Hi
This fault code can sometimes come up due to the motor having low resistance to earth.
Can your local guy meggar between the motor pins and the chassis of the motor?
Power off before undertaking any work
Good luck

Thanks Geoff, but all tried already. 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} it’s the PCB, so decided to bite the bullet and buy a new machine. New PCB, new counterbalance weight, all adds up to more than is worth to repair an 8 year old machine, particularly seeing as I’m not convinced more damage wasn’t done when the weight fell off, which I may not discover for a while!
New Machine arriving soon, old already given for spares to my local guy for a donation to the RNLI!
