Temperature the machine reaches has dropped significantly to warm with obvious result that clothes are taking much longer to dry. Am guessing there is a problem with the thermostat but before I replace am looking for any words of wisdom from those with a greater knowledge of these machines than I have.

You may wish to check your washing machine and depending on make the filter.
If it has a filter and it’s not been cleaned for a while then this can cause the clothes to come out not having been fully spun resulting in the tumble dryer not managing to deal with the excess wet.
