ParticipantI’ve had a Miele Prestige Plus 6 since July 2008. During this time I’ve occasionally noticed small round holes appearing in clothes and have put it down to wear and tear, belt buckles etc. After ruining a brand new top a couple of weeks ago I started checking my clothes both before and after a wash cycle and I’m now sure it’s the washing machine causing the holes as they only appear after the wash. I’ve read about lots of possible causes but….I never over fill the machine and I check the instructions on the garments carefully. I also tend to use the 900 spin as the 1300 makes the clothes too hard and creased. I use Ariel colour tablets for coloured and Fairy non-bio for whites (I live in a hard water area). I’ve done the silk stocking test in the drum and can find no sharp edges. And I don’t use underwired bras! The holes are perfectly round and about 5mm in diameter. Can anyone tell me what’s causing them and what can be done? Has anyone ever contacted the manufacturers and had this type of problem solved? Surely they can’t get away with just saying it’s the way people are using the machines. My old Zanussi lasted me 20 years and never holed a thing.

Wipe around the inner drum with a nylon stocking. Pulled threads indicate a burr in the inner drum.
Small burrs can be removed with fine sand paper or a grinding stone.
If necessary, exchange the inner drum.
During spinning, laundry catches on a distorted heater element.
During spinning, centrifugal force presses the laundry against and partially through the drum perforations. If the gap between the inner drum and heater element is < 10 mm, laundry can catch on the heater element and tear.
During spinning, laundry catches on the water deflector.
During spinning, centrifugal force presses the laundry against and partially through the drum perforations. If the gap between the inner drum and water deflector is < 6 mm, laundry can catch on the water deflector and tear.
You really need to get Miele to check the machine If the washing machine is causing the fault, the damage can increase with each successive wash.
hope this helps? BrianMarch 17, 2010 at 12:47 am #315186kwatt

I’m sorry if these seem obvious questions but…
What sort of clothing are you getting this on?
Material composition?
Are they heavy of light garments?
This is a common-ish problem in some respects but I’d need more information on what is getting the holes in it to advise further as it would appear you’ve looked at the mechanical reasons.

K – I’ve had holes in cotton tee shirts, cotton/polyester mix jumpers (not particularly thick ones) and a thicker fluffy jumper, a cotton mix cardigan and socks. I washed the same types of garments in my old machine using the same detergents.
As the holes are all the same size and perfectly round, I think the clothes must be getting pulled through the holes in the drum, as Brian suggests. I think I might just have to give Miele a call.

Check the washing machine labels on your torn clothes first because if you have been washing them on the wrong type of programme( most people only use a couple of programmes regardless of instructions) miele will charge and it’s the first thing the engineer will go for.

Agreed.
This has been cropping up a fair bit and it always seems to be light garments quite probably washed on the wrong care cycle and the garments are usually of indeterminate quality.
The first thing I’d check is that you are using the correct wash cycle according the care labels, most people don’t bother looking and just chuck stuff in I’m afraid on any old wash cycle. However, as I find myself telling both trade and public fairly often, the cycle that you choose will be designed for certain types of fabric, put the wrong ones on the wrong cycle and it can cause irreparable damage to the garments.
The mixed fibre garments as an example, should not be washed on a cotton cycle as the wash and spin actions are too severe for the fabrics and this would instantly explain the holes as the garments are washed with a mechanical action beyond the limit that they can take.

I am careful about washing on the correct cycle so I don’t think it’s that. However, looking through the instruction book last night I discovered that I can programme the machine to wash with a ‘gentle action’ overall rather than the standard default action. So I’ve done that and I’m going to buy a couple of large net bags to protect the garments. I’ll see if that makes a difference before I risk calling Miele.
Thanks for your suggestions.
