ParticipantHi
My Miele Novotronic has just developed a noise but during the normal wash cycle the noise only occurs when the drum is turning one way. It also occurs during the spin.
It sounds like it could be the motor but I’m not 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} on that.I’ve had the lid off but cannot see where the noise is coming from but if I turn on a spin cycle the noise starts when the drum starts spinning but if I turn off the power mid spin the noise stops immediately but the drum keeps spinning. This would lead me to suspect the motor.
Can anyone advise please and if it is the motor, how much would I expect to pay to get a engineer to fit a new one?
many thanks

It might be appropriate if you described the noise….
Knocking, banging, scraping, crackling, rasping, dragging, groaning are all good identifiable sounds.
If it stops when you switch off on spin, I’d suspect crackling or rasping if it stops – this would indicate that the motor brushes may well be worn out and starting to make a poor contact.

I would definitely describe it as a crackling noise so would suspect that it could be the brushes.
Can I get replacements and how easy/hard a job is it to replace them.?Alternatively, what should I expect to pay for an engineer to supply and fit them?
The wash cycle does not complete now. It crashes out with the “Rinses” light flashing rapidly. The operating instructions say that this is a “call for service” situation.

Rinse light flashing denotes no motor action, or no feedback from tacho.
9 times out of ten it will be brushes!!
im sure Mr p can help you with spares?March 19, 2010 at 10:46 pm #315513bluemark

Ok thanks – I plan to try to inspect the existing brushes before I order replacements.
What is the best way to access the brushes?I have the lid off and am not sure whether to lay the machine down on it’s side to get to the motor or whether it would be best to unscrew the front panel. If it’s the fornt panel, does anyone have details of the steps to remove it please.
thanks

Stop…. Front opens like a cupboard. Few screws round the soap drawer, the three bolts around the door seal and the spring latch in the filter flap to be released and the whole thing will swing open.
Motor is under the drum; brushes are in a carrier plate which can be removed after 4 screws are undone and the motor plug removed.
A selection of Miele carbons can be found HERE.
Stay safe – power off.

Problem Solved – It was the carbon brushes. I have installed new brushes and it’s working like new now.
Many thanks to everbody for their input with this especially Penguin45 who explained how to get at the brushes.
For future reference, if anyone else needs to change their brushes I would recommend they check out the pics on the link below which were taken by another poster on a different thread. They show what the motor looks like and helped me no end in identifying where the brushes were actually located, etc. -
