About 5 years old and used regularly (about 2x per week)
I don’t think the first word of the subject is an exaggeration! The machine makes a very loud noise on spin, but nothing which seems odd on any other function. The best analogy I can think of is that it is as loud as a fast train going through a station when you’re on the platform – it is genuinely unpleasant being in the same room when it’s spinning.
That we have just begun to comment on this must mean that it has got worse recently, but I think it has been getting noisier gradually – over the last year or so (perhaps even lomger).
When we turn the drum manually, it makes a slight ‘grinding'(?) noise, as though there might be something stuck, but we’ve followed some of the advice given to other, similar questions, and can’t see anything obvious.
As is probably obvious, I am technically completely useless, but I’d appreciate any advice, especially on the underlying anxiety: is it likely to be approaching the end of its life or might it be repairable?
Many thanks to anyone who takes the time to read and reply.March 21, 2010 at 11:35 am #315793john10671

Is there alot of movement on the drum up and down sounds like it could be the bearings.

Hard for me to know what is normal, but:
side to side: a tiny bit of movement
up and down: almost no movement
in/out – back to front: most movement, but doesn’t ‘feel’ loose or abnormalSorry: this is all probably too vague.

What would be the best way to do this? (Sorry for taking up your time – am really grateful for the feedback!)?

You need to make sure you unplug machine first then you can either take out the heating element or take off the sump hose which is at the bottom of the drum both of these will give you access to see if there is anything in tub.(will still be water in if you take off sump hose) just put a towel down

Still sounds like bearings to me, remove the mains plug, take off the belt and spin the drum by hand. If it makes any kind of a grumbling, grinding noise your bearings have gone.
You can see into the drum without removing the heater which is very difficult to get out and much harder to get back in afterwards.
Using a small, thin bladed screwdriver, insert it into the third hole from the front of one of the blue drum lifters and press down gently. you should now be able to pull the drum lifter forward and take it out. you can see most foreign bodies if there are any through the holes under the lifter.
To refit the lifter you must first lift back up the small tab on the drum you depressed to release it, slide it back in and push it backwards until it clicks into place. If the rest of the machine is fine then it would be worth having the machine repaired, not a simple DIY fix though.

Many thanks to those who have contributed advice.
It looks certain that the bearings have gone. Two local firms have quoted “about £120” and “around £150” (their words) and we feel that, as it’s possible the bearings might not be the only problem, we’ll probably go for a replacement. As we’re planning to move back to France (my wife is French) within the next 2-3 years, we’re not looking for super quality. Anyone have any thoughts about the Hoover OPH614, currently on sale at £279?
(Perhaps I can post this question separately, if Forum etiquette allows it?)
Again, all advice very gratefully received. -
