ParticipantHi, I have above indesit WG1185, drum not turning on wash or spin. Tried all the usual suspects, drive belt OK, interlock OK, brushes OK and armature cleaned, field coil/armature tested OK, timer OK and steps on, wiring and edge connectors checked OK, and no obvious components burnt out – is it possible the PCB control board could be dead? is it possible to bypass to check the motor?how do you bench test the motor? incidentally, it is a SOLE motor

Post edited to remove functional test information.
You should be able to check the motor without resorting to the above method, just using a multimeter on ohms. The field coil should read about 1 ohm, the brushes about 3 ohms and the tacho coil is usually several hundred ohms. There will also be a thermal cutout in the motor which should read as short circuit and may be the cause of the trouble. You sometimes need to dismantle the motor to work out which wires go to the TOC.
Another possibility is a burnt out triac in the speed control circuit board.March 25, 2010 at 11:48 am #316290barrylovell

thanks for the tip, I am a competent engineer so will give it a test in the vice. I have also checked all the field coils and through the brushed with ohmmeter, and get results as you have suggested. Also, the TOC test OK, and is looking likely fault with tryac in PCB module – thanks quick reply

Phidom, I have tested the motor as you described and works perfectly well in the vice, so thanks for that little tipI have noticed one of the tracks on the PCB motor timer is lifted where the small edge connector is pushed on. I have metered it from the edge connector to one of the tracks and it is dis. Next task is to bypass the edge connector and connect everything back up, and see how we go from there….will keep you posted on progress

The dire warnings were mainly for other people who read these forums and may not be as clued up as yourself. I have now edited out the funtional motor test advice, just in case others are tempted to have a play!

Phidom, Just to advise of the final solution, the motor speed controller was faulty, and the replacement from Whitegoods worked fine, so will be taking the repaired machine to my small abode in France at next opportunity……
