I have a f&p gw-703-k which developed a short in the motor leading to a dead set of mosfets,
first i tried mtp6n60 hexfets, but the load appears to be to high for them.

can someone tell me if the irf840 from radiospares is a suitable replacement for the irf840R units that were in there???

    they have ratings of 8A / 32A whereas the 6n60 has 6/18.

    thanks

    FRED.

    Fred,

You are on the wrong web site mate for your type of question???? This is a WHITEGOODS site. We repair washing machines, fridges, not Mosfets on circuitboards.

We wouldn’t have a clue even about what you are asking, What’s a f&p washer when its at home anyway???

    Sorry!

I thought he was talking a different language with Mosfets and Hexfets (figured it was “Browngoods speak” even) 😆

Bryan, how on earth did you manage to translate a possible American Top Loader with a motor fault out of that? 😯

Must be the “f&p” I guess, whatever that means 🙄

Will watch with interest what develops. How is your Evil Twin by the way…..

It’s a Fisher & Pykell smart drive top loader with the direct drive dc motor. It’s a VERY clever piece of kit.

No components listed but the motor control board is listed as p/no 425895P. Contact a Whirlpool spares outlet for ordering.

All F&P spares have to be ordered from asd at Leeds. The service is not good though as not all the old F&P part numbers convert to whirlpool numbers.

Since this went to Whirlpool spares has become a huge problem and you might be better off looking at the F&P website in NZ.

Lets just say that we no longer get involved with private repairs to F&P products and spares is the problem.

I’ve got the workshop manuals on these if you get really stuck. Bob at F+P Service in NZ sent them over about 2 years ago for an import machine I had to sort out.

http://www.fp.co.nz will take you there if you want to try that way!

Funnily enough I know what MOSFETS are. 😉

You may well not be able to get them as a spare part Fred and certainly not from F&P as they will probably only sell a full PCB and not any components off the PCB. As a general rule we don’t go to down component level on electronic cards and we certainly don’t go looking for faults in any of the ICs.

I hav’nt heard the term MOSFET since 1979!, Harlow technical college! I think its a Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor and I must admit that it means more to me than Ken and his Bots. But in this case I guess the whole board should be changed.
I think there are JUGFETS as well but thats another story.

Hi Fred, I am based in New Zealand where the Smartdrive Machine was developed by Fisher & Paykel (F&P). I was involved in the repair of the Smartdrives until 1998 and then I taught myself the repair of the motor Control Modules that you are speaking about. I now rebuild those modules for 10 medium sized washing machine repair companies in Auckland city here in NZ. Ok thats my background. In answer to your Question yes the Irf840 Hexfet is the correct component and all Irf840’s are suitable. The Irf840 is made by International Rectifier and go to their website for more info and where in your area they can be purchased. This component is popular for use in Monitors and TV’s as well so easy to obtain. Check the little surface mount components on the other side of the board. P.S Hexfet is a registered name for the type of component commonly refered to as a MOSFET. I&R’s info file on the Irf840 will show that info. Also check a component labeled ir2111s on the smd side of the board if it is a “yellow” or “mustard” case. Again read the info about ir2111s on I&R’s site. Good Luck 😀

excellent post stan and welcome to ukw.

Hope you can spread the word down there as we are all stronger for sharing tech info and friendships through this sort of medium.

For instance tech support on fp product here is now poor since the tie up between whp and fp, so for independents to repair it is all uphill. Shame really as the dishdraw is a brill bit of kit.

So’s the washer. Perhaps a bit of sharing with the UK board repairers might be mutually benificial in the long term?

People over here are gradually learning that the sole advantage of a front loader is that it fits under a work surface.

I look after a NZ lady locally with an FP dryer and so far we’ve managed to get away with “proprietary” components. The build quality of the machine ( A 3/4 size t/d) is very good, and I didn’t cut my hands to ribbons when I changed the belt. Which was nice.

    Good luck Stan,
    Regards,

    Penguin.
