ParticipantHi,
I have a Diplomat APM 8512 machine which started making a strange sound during the wash cycle, the drum looked like it was struggling to turn and was rocking.
However, all cycles WORK when the drum is empty, spin, wash etc. As soon as I put a load in and set the wash cycle it starts off ok and the reverts back to the noise and the rocking action.
I’ve read various sites but am finding it hard to locate the exact problem as everything seems ok on empty. Machine has been running for 5 years with no issues. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Hi
Check module for depleted solder if not poss module fault and /or start capacitor faulty usually app 18uF; cheapest option 🙂 .
Power off before investigating :plug:Greg

Or maybe belt is stretched and slipping – can you describe the sound? Haven’t seen enough of these machines to know if motor position can be adjusted to tighten belt, otherwise new belts aren’t expensive.

If memory serves me right you will find that a change of the starter capacitor will provide the remedy for this fault on this machine…

Gents, appreciate the detailed responses. The noise is like a grinding/whirring noise…like the machine is struggling to turn. I’m going to take a punt on the starter capacitor at first.
OK I’ve got the machine out, top off and I see two capacitors one in right back corner and another one next to it. I’m guessing the starter capacitor is the one that says 20uF ICAR Ecofill MLR25PRL and has 4 connectors? The other one has a circuit diagram on it and lots of numbers including 0.47uf and 5 connectors.
I’ve had a look and the closest I could find was this universal capacitor:

Cheers

Yes that will do the trick Im sure; just transpose wire for wire. Power off of course 😉

Got the new capacitor yesterday, whacked it in and it worked! A massive thanks to all of you for your advice and making me look good in front of her indoors. 😀

I had this same fault with the drum turning, then rocking, and a humming noise. I called a repair company who sent an engineer. He said the motor was knackered and I would be best off buying a new machine.
I found this thread after a quick google, spent £5 on ebay on a starter capacitor, and fitted it in 5 mins. Machine is good as new.
Cheers, Tim
