im my last job before i started out myself i had a bonus system
basically the 1st £1000 i brought in from repairs didnt count, anything else after that i got 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}
so if i brought in £2000 in 1 week i got £100 bonus
always encouraged me to bust a gut and earn as much as possible.

I can only speak for my experiences from working for Hotpoint over 30 years ago.
We had a bonus system in place when I first started and TBH it was an incentive to do fast, shoddy work, cut corners, fit parts that were not needed and to sell service contracts on clapped out machines that should have been scrapped in the first place.
At that time the service division was treated as the poor relation, run down vehicles, poor back up in most areas whilst the sales team ran around in new cars, each major store had Hotpoint employed ‘ Lady Demonstrators’ being paid far more than the engineers.
Mr Weinstock, the big cheese at GEC put his brother in law, Shiam Schreiber [sp], (the very same Mr Schreiber who at that time had his own furniture company ) in complete control of what was then known as BDA and he completely transformed the lot of the service engineer. He stated that the engineer was the companies most important contact with the customer and set about changing the status quo. He got rid of all of the Lady Demonstrators, drastically reduced the sales team, abolished the bonus structure and put in place a decent salary with minor incentives that did not rely on ‘performance’ as such.
The tatty old blue boiler suits went and a modern uniform was introduced, also the van fleet was vastly improved.
It was radical overhaul but it did lead to a much happier work force and strangely enough, improved productivity.
Things have doubtless gone downhill in a big way since but the gist of my post is, pay a decent basic wage, give good quality support with vehicle, stock and tech info and you should have no need to pay a bonus to anyone who is a good, conscientious employee.

not abad idea ,
but we have a mixed bag of clients mostly insu co
where prices are irrelevant .. engineer could add uneeded parts etc to bump up total …not saying he would but dont want to put cost per job throught the roof etc ..as we have a mixed bag of jobs/clients i was thinking of a points based system where each job has a points value …
ie
normal run of mill job pump change etc = 1 pt
tub job = 2 pts
long duration intergrated appliance 2 pts
recall – 1 pt ??
dont want ot over complicate things but i think i could reasonably establish which jobs deserves which points value and agree this with eng ..each point would = £ .. this is where the tricky bit is … whats a point worth … to little engineer wont bother …to much profit loss …
my only problem with this is , i dont want to turn the whole job thing into a money making scheme where engineer is thinking only of racking up points to get £££..
i know at the end of the day thats why we all go to work – to make money.
so hopefully i can come up with something that doesnt make him to greedy and will give him a balanced reward for his hard work .
any other ideas welcome …

I think Jim is right, ask any engineer and i think they would agree.
All you ever want is a descent wage for a descent days work, also a bit of appreciation now and again also goes a longway. 😉John.

YIP BEEN THERE GOT THE TSHIRT ..
been with a few bonuss co,s myself b4 started on own..
so kinda went full circle , from my own experience bonuss only works up to a point and for that matter wages do as well …if your employed their is no way you will put the same amount of effort time and time again as a self employed person… the reason being you are only getting a capped wages whether you put the effort in or not …
i agree with jims post ,
im just looking for a simple sytem that rewards as well as keeping eng on toes …
( that i can tote up quicky etc dont want to spend endless hours )April 29, 2010 at 8:42 am #318957lee8

Bonus is a an incentive to do whatever it takes, usually far worse than anything found on watchdog.
Engineers jobs are simple, if its broke we fix it, the difference though is should I cable tie a broken part hoping it last long enough to be able to have the correct part when it final falls off and get 2 completed calls for the price of one or order a replacement.
The cable tie scenario on paper shows that engineer is better than the one who orders, his completion is high, so he has to be a good engineer, right.
That is the reality of idiots running service depts, there usually bad engineers who have sucked up to the boss and become managers who in my experience couldn’t run a childrens party.
Personnally I wouldn’t use a bonus scheme, as engineers we have little control over company stock levels (in big companies) the ones on a bonus scheme should be the ones running the poor control systems and the call centres who cannot write correct faults from the client.
If you get the right info first, then prep the calls correctly, then the last one who needs to get it right is the engineer, a bit like a goalie, if everything else is working right first, then we should be the last resort, in reality the team is generally poor, the result then reflects on the goalie.

wow is your real name cantona lol..
yeh we try to run a tight ship -pre ordering etc ..
im not really a fan of bonuss myself , but on the other hand not really a fan of giving money away whether its bonus or increase of wages – as there comes apoint where money isnt the driver …
example lee ? football player he doesnt play better cos you give him an extra 20k a week …does he .
althought im not a fan of bonuss culture i do like the idea behind it …rewarding for extra effort ,
anyway if theres anyone who runs a bonuss system , please let me know

Naw, a large white tranny with a Perkins Diesel engine. The yellow J4’s were ex GEC service vans, every time you went over a bump in one of those everything on the front parcel shelf jumped up into the air and fell all over the place. 😥
