Can anyone please explain why my dishwasher suddenly extended its cycle completion time? It’s taking between four and five hours depending on programme, but appears to otherwise be working correctly.

When I start it, it makes a noise for several seconds as though the reservoir is being emptied then filled, (though I can’t be sure that water is flowing) then stands idle for around half an hour or more before the blades start to spin. It then stops again for a couple of lengthy periods in ‘mid-cycle’, before completing. The water is heating and the stuff inside is clean, except that recently it has started to leave a milky deposit, especially on stainless steel – including the interior sides and bottom.

    Any suggestions gratefully accepted. Thanks

It’s either a fill issue (poor pressure, trapped/kinked hose or inlet valve failing) or it’s underfilling. Pipework in these sludge up with fat, causing false level reading.

Thank you Penguin. Is the inlet valve the flat, square box attached to the water mains pipe? I can feel this vibrating for quite a long time during the period before the actual wash starts. Would that indicate that it is failing or that the water is only trickling through over a prolonged period of time?

Is there anything I can check within the machine? As it is built-in, removing it is beyond my limited DIY capabilities.

Yup, “Aquastop” hose assembly on that machine. Remove hose and check filter mesh – you might also want to check the flow from the tap itself.
