Hi. My trusty Miele washing machine today began tripping the safety switch on my home’s main fuseboard – not an ‘individual’ circuit switch, but one of the larger switches which, I am told, indicates it is an earthing issue.

I am unable to tell what stage of cycle the machine is at, but the clothes are wet and soapy, water remains in drum. Now when I turn the machine on, the switch is tripped within three seconds.

Mains plug is a sealed unit and fuse in that is obviously not suffering. Could the fault be in there?

Power off, I have removed the lid to do a visual check on the condition of wiring and overall dampness. I then tilted the machine and had a good look from the underside. All looks clean, dry and factory fresh, no obvious water leaks or other visible problems.

Any suggestions for a DIY investigation/solution, before I call one of you guys?

    Thanks for your help.

    Regards

Water level control is a known issue with these machines – the pressure chamber fills with sludge and causes under-filling, which damages the heater, leading to earthing faults as the element breaks down.

Power off if you’re going to open the front and have a look.

    Thanks Penquin.

Do I remove the entire front panel, or just the base?

Even assuming I can identify the pressure chamber and clean it, which sounds easy enough, is identifying the element as faulty something I could then do, or would it simply need to be replaced to see if that is the problem.

Sounds like I might be heading into deep water (not literally, I hope).

    Thanks for your help.

    Regards

    Cillian
