ParticipantGuys – Have an old upright Ocean Freezer, sorry but can’t see model number on the sticker inside, all the numbers appear to have faded / come off.
It’s a basic model with the single dial marked clockwise from – to + then S (with slot requiring a screwdriver to turn it easily) the green power light (which gave up the ghost years ago) the orange super/fast freeze, and the red warning / “something’s wrong” light.
It’s that red light that is now on, it has been on for about 48 hours now, but it still seems to be working (making the normal humming noise) with the freezer thermometer O have put inside maintaining the same temperature (around -23 degrees), I am assuming I would have seen the temperature rising over 48 hours if it wasn’t freezing properly, particularly with the warm weather we have been having? It is in the garage and has never had problems before no matter how cold or warm the external temperature has got.
Long shot but any ideas what could be wrong?
Thanks, as always, for any help

Two choices really…either the compressor is worn and your thermometer is inaccurate or the thermostat is faulty, so if you can confirm your thermometer is telling you the actual temperature then you will need one of these.

Thanks Clive, it is a separate thermometer i have placed on the top shelf, so I will try and test the thermometer.
That being said, if the thermometer maintains a constant temperature (and varies only when I alter the dial) and the warning light stays on does this suggest the compressor rather than the thermostat?
Do you think I will then be on borrowed time until it fails completely? To be honest with the age if I need to spend more than about a tenner to fix it it’s not worth it!
I am not expecting a definite solution, but a view from someone who knows a darn sight more than me is appreciatd!

The red warning light is a function of the thermostat (the 3rd contact on it) and i admit it’s unusual for that part to fail whilst the stat continues to control the temperature successfully.
If you can spend a little time with the machine listen to see if the compressor cuts out, then switches on again within an hour or so. If it runs continuously then it’s gateaux…you could try switching it off for half a day to let it cool down then run it on the minimum setting, if it’s badly worn that will buy you a little time especially if the weather cools off a bit but it’s the beginning of the end for it i’m afraid.

Thanks again Clive, it seems to be responding to alterations in the dial at the moment.
Been away and haven’t had time to listen to compressor turning on and off, but I think I’ll just go ahead and replace the old girl. -
