Please can anyone help me work out what is wrong with my washing machine, it is a Hotpoint ultima extra WMA62 washing machine and it approx 8 years old. I have never had any trouble with it until recently when it has started banging around and jumping out from beneath the work top. It doesn’t happen all the time but it’s getting worse and last week it was jumping so violently between the cabinets that i was really afraid it was going to shake itself apart, it has done this a couple of times before on faster spin cycles – but this time there also seemed to be an orange glow on the inside around the rim of the drum, i immediately turned off the power and i haven’t used it since. For the last few months i have been using it on a spin speed of 400 as i didn’t dare go any faster but even that now seems to be too much. Also for the last few weeks it has been smelling damp and of mildew and it is making my clothes smell very musty, If anyone can let me know if it is worth getting it fixed or should i consider a new machine, it does get used a lot, sometimes 3 or 4 times a day!

The orange glowing would really concern me.Call an engineer.Without looking at the machine myself I would say you have a serious problem with you bearings and or drum.

Has the machine been very noisy recently ?
Does it make a loud noise when you spin the drum by hand, if you push or pull on the inner drum does it appear to be loose inside the outer drum, do you live in a soft water area and use liquid detergents and low temperature washes most of the time?

It has been quite noisy i suppose, but it doesn’t make a noise when i turn it by hand, i have tried pulling the drum and it could be quite loose but i have never tried doing that before so i have no comparisons. I always use tablet detergents, but i do wash at low temps, there is getting quite a build up of limescale on parts of the machine, could this be part of the problem?

It is possible that the drum support has corroded through. Its a much thicker drum support on the WMA machines compared to the earlier WM machines but I have seen several WMA drum supports rotted through in this very soft water area in past 12 months as the machines get to between five and eight years old.
The machine definitely needs looking at before you attempt to use it again.
Constant low temperature washes does eventually lead to this sort of damage.
