ParticipantI have a Zanussi ZDC5350 condenser dryer, that I’ve had since Sept/Oct 2004. The last couple of days it has started stopping during the cycle, flashing E50 and beeping loudly. Sometimes it will restart and carry on the cycle, others it will not do anything for a minute or two and then beep again.
The instruction book has no notes that I can see on the error codes, and a google search appears to suggest it could be motor related, but I wondered if anyone here could offer more suggestions, or any way of narrowing down the fault code to something specific?

E50 is a generic motor or motor control related fault. Full diagnostics test is the only way to pin it down a little more.
First thing to do would be to remove the mains plug and check the motor brushes.

If I may ask a daft question, can you give me an idea what I should be looking for when checking the brushes?

ParticipantLOL, itll be the first tumble dryer ive seen with brushes in the motor
id check the capacitor first.. side panel off
most people just take the top off, start the machine, and give the drum a push, if it goes, its def the capacitor

😳 DOH, it was late for me, read it as a washer/dryer. 😥

ParticipantHeh, no worries about the mistake. I was a bit puzzled as to whether it would have brushes or not.
Ta, I’ll try taking the top off it and give it a shot. Or, given how it’s behaving, loosen the top and run it until it stops and I can test it. Would the capacitor work sometimes and not others?

It can be intermittant, the capcitor gives the motor a ‘kick start’ so it may sometimes run empty or with a light load.

Yeah, it’ll just about run with a light load or empty, though sometimes sounds like it’s hiccuping a bit. Sounds like capacitor is a good bet.
Is there any specific capacitor that would do, or can it be any for a Zanussi/Electrolux/AEG dryer?

The capacitor is usually bolted to the side of the motor, its rating will be on it.
Any capacitor of the correct rating will suffice, usually between 7uf and 10uf on dryers.
It will be one of THESE 😉

It was a 9uf capacitor, and I’ve now tried replacing it but having no luck. The drum is not turning at all, you can hear a slight click after pressing start but nothing else and then just the E50 error again.
Is there any combination of buttons that can be pushed to get something more specific than the E50 error? Or any other suggestions for what it could be?

Sadly on checking ,all four of the E50 codes relate to either motor or control PCB failure. 😥

Ah, so unfortunately it’s looking like it might be something rather more expensive 🙁
