For all programmes, the machine fills with water and just sits there with about a one inch depth of water above the top filter. The display shows ‘wash’ as in progress, but nothing happens thereafter. No heating, no pumping, nothing.
All programmes show the same thing – even the ‘quick’ programme.
‘Reset’ function works and the machine will pump out and display 0.
The controller board looks OK with no signs of anything being burned out and the relays seem to be in order.
Any advice on other things to look for?

Lid off, RHS panel off then see if you can carefully turn the wash pump by hand using a finger or blunt object through it’s end frame (carefully avoid the windings)
Let us know whether it turns easily or not?

Great idea. I think I see where you’re steering me. Now for the really dumb question . . . how do I get the lid off?
I can see a couple of small bolts on the front edge of the side panels. I can see plastic clip/hinges at the back of the lid, but I don’t see anything at the front to release & enable rotation of the top. I’m fearful of breaking something, so don’t want to force anything.

Well health and safety dictates we can’t give you a remove screw ‘A’ and ‘B’ type instruction (see forum rules), suffice to say the lid doesn’t have screws, is secured at the back then slides back and lifts off 😉

I know Clive, but thanks for your help. Do you think an ambulance chasing H&S lawyer would know the trick?
It’s a pity Bosch don’t put manuals for their older stuff up on their websites. Surely, that’s where the need is.
Away for a few days now, but I’ll poke around the machine again when I’m home.

Thanks for the access tips Clive.
The motor seems to spin freely enough by hand and the associated capacitor is not short circuited.
I watched & listened to what happens on an attempt at a quick wash – from a safe distance etc. etc..
After filling, the motor didn’t spin at all, but it did become *very* hot. Eventually, there was a faint click – presumably a thermal cut-out operating.
I fear the motor is burned out, which would make it uneconomical to repair. Unless there are any suggestions, I’m bracing myself for severe stabbing pains in the wallet. My missis has definite appliance shopping plans for the weekend :^( .

Capacitor is not “kicking off” the motor.

Brilliant. Thanks Penguin45. I put an ohmeter across the (disconnected) capacitor terminals & it has definitely gone o/c. I don’t see one on the Bosch spares list here, but Maplin & RS do similar ones for 3-4 quid each. Would they do?
Usual question – how do I get at it? Does the capacitor unscrew, or do I have to remove the whole blinking motor first?

All fixed. Missis is happy & stabbing pains in my wallet have subsided. This is a superb forum – many thanks to Clive and Penguin45 for their help.
For the benefit of anybody else who toddles down this path . . .
I found an exact replacement capacitor via eBay [ :^( .] priced at £4.50 and delivered via Royal Mail within 24h.
There was no need to remove the motor. By unscrewing the capacitor body slightly, then sliding it out and up along the open-ended slot on the mounting plate attached to the motor, it could be removed with the motor in situ. It was very tight and did need the judicious use of a pair of pliers to slacken it the first few degrees. I kept the nut for re-use because it was better than the nut & washer supplied with the new one. The replacement went back in the same way, by spinning the nut onto the mounting stud with just enough clearance to slide it into the mounting slot. Then, by pulling the capacitor body along its cylindrical axis to provide some friction for the nut, it can be tightened up.
