Please help! I’d be so grateful for any recommendations (esp. with a rough idea of cost) for a new built-in oven to replace a dead one in the house I let. I now live overseas so can’t explore things there so easily, and internet access is a bit limited here so I can’t research it online easily either.

I’ve had such a lot of expenses this last year that I can’t afford an expensive model, though I agree that “you get what you pay for”.

My agent has quoted me “£259 + VAT and labour (totalling approximately £360 + VAT)”. Doesn’t specify any make or model. Does this seem roughly the right sort of figure for the oven & installation?

I’d like something that won’t break the bank, but will last a while and not be too high-spec for the tenant to operate easily. If you can’t recommend a particular model, is there a make which is generally reliable & of reasonable quality?
Many thanks to anyone who replies.

    Hi Renna

I would say that the price is a little steep but it does depend on what they are supplying. If you add on the VAT the price of the oven comes out at £300 odd pound. For that sort of money you should get a pretty good machine, I would ask the agent to give you the make and model number so you can look it up to see if it`s suitable, then let us know on here to see if we can advise further.

Working out the maths that makes the installation about £100. I would ask the agent for a breakdown of quotation by email so you can digest it further 😉 After all at the end of the day it`s your money they are spending and you have to be sure they are using it wisely.

Oh thank you, don, for the quick reply. I have emailed the agent for more details. As soon as I hear, I’ll post the info.

Does £100 for installation seem expensive? I’m very out of touch with UK costs now. I just worry that we (private, not BTL) landlords are sometimes easy pickings for contractors & agents. At any rate, I haven’t made a profit on the let for years! Always something needing expensive repairs, replacements etc etc. And it’s so hard to investigate these things further, when you’re not in situ.

I’m sure the heating element (on the oven which has now stopped working & is anyway only 7 years old) was replaced less than a year ago, too!

Could anyone offer advice as to which makes are GENERALLY best (most reliable) for the cheaper range of electric built in oven, say under £230 (excl. VAT)? Alternatively, are there any I should try to avoid?

    Hi renna

I take it we are talking about a single oven?

As for brands you could go with Hotpoint, belling, Gorenje, Beko, Ignis, Indesit, New World and Zanussi, all of those would be okay.

Not so keen on Candy and Hoover but that`s just me 😉

Thanks again. What about Bosch, might they have a bottom range model under £240? They have a good reputation in other appliances.

By the way, what does HTH stand for?

    Hope This Helps 😉

Could try Cata EFM60SS at £199.00 or cheapo static oven Cata EOS60SS at £119.00. Both come with a 2 year guarantee and B&Q have them available to take away. Simply to operate and little to go wrong with them.

Thanks, greaseater. Never heard of Cata before. What do you think of them, Don?

I think the agents like to deal with a shop that will instal the new oven & remove the old one, rather than go shopping themselves, but I’m not sure & can ask them.

Sorry, but what is a STATIC oven? Non-fan-assisted, perhaps? Are they not as good as fan ovens, or better?

Re: Please help: replacement oven for tenants – inexpensive

Static oven is without a fan around the heating element and therefore needs pre-heating before use. Fan ovens are much better but of course cost more and depends on how much you are willing to spend.

    Thank you, greaseater.

I’ll probably get a single oven fan-assisted, as it’ll be cheaper to run if it heats more quickly & seems a better product. Now to find a cheap one!

Re: Please help: replacement oven for tenants – inexpensive

Hello again. Could I ask you for opinions on these options:

    1. INDESIT FI21KBIX Built-in Electric Single Oven (conventional)
    2. INDESIT F131KBIX ” ” ” ” (conventional fan assisted)
    3. NEW WORLD NW64FP Built-in Electric Single Oven

    1. and 2. both have Energy ratings B & identical features & prices at £199.99 at Curry’s. However, 2. is a more popular seller, has slightly less oven capacity (4L less) and originally cost £50 more but is on sale now.

    3. has “fan-heating functionality and an integrated variable grill” with ENERGY RATING A, and also costs £199.99 It also seems to have more features, but how important they are I don’t know.

Please see this link for a comparison of features on the Curry’s website:
    http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/s/comparom … ntid=30234

The cost of fitting it is now given as £60 excluding VAT.

I’d be very grateful for your thoughts, and thank you for your help so far!
    Renna
