Are scottish notes legal tender here in england as having quite a few lately some places refuse to take them and have been told they not legal tender, only Bank of England notes are legal tender in England and Wales. 😕

They are legal currency, but illegal tender in England & Wales.
Its complicated, but basically anybody has the right to refuse any form of tender for payment, so you cannot force a shop etc to accept them for payment.

In short NO, these notes are not legal tender only Bank of England notes are legal tender but only in England and Wales.
The term legal tender does not in itself govern the acceptability of bank notes in transactions blah blah blah, this goes on and on.However if down south you have some scotty notes any bank will change these for english ones with oot any further adoo.
silverbroomStrange I Used to see a few Scotish notes around but now down south I havn’t seen one for about 3 years .

Took a couple of Bank of Scotland tenners yesterday.
Far more acceptable than a cheque 😉

I am told that if is a note with the queens head on it it is legal tender and shops are not allowed to refuse usage as payment

Being English and living in Scotland I find this a real pain. I once went abroad and did not have time to bank the previous weeks takings so was going to change them into the local currency for use as spending money. Nobody overseas would change my Scottish money even at airports, they only accept English notes when changing Sterling.
When I go to Nuneaton on family visits etc. I routinely deposit my Scottish notes and withdraw English ones. This was easier when I banked with Abbey but now I’m with the Clydesdale bank which does not have branches in England. I now deposit my Scottish notes in my Nationwide savings account and draw English ones from the Clydesdale from a hole in the wall machine.
I will still pay bills for meals, rounds of drinks etc with the Scottish notes because once you have received such things you can just claim ” Well, that’s all I’ve got, take it or leave it.”
Most big supermarkets will take the Scottish notes but Debenhams in Nuneaton refused point blank, even after several minutes argument! I don’t know if Debenhams have a shop in Carlisle but it would be interesting to see if they could get away with such a rule.Re: scottish notes

If anyone is struggling with getting rid of these said notes then please allow me to give you my bank details to deposit them in , dont want to see you stuck with them, bit of northern hospitality :rotl:

Both my kids live in England, a few months ago I went to my bank, (Bank of Scotland) to change a couple of Scottish £20 notes to put into birthday cards for them.
They refused to change them even thought I could see English notes in the tellers drawer. Bank policy is to only issue Bank of Scotland notes over the counter. I had to go to the post office instead.
