My Bosch WFK 2801 washing machine makes a loud screeching noise during the spin cycle. I have changed the bearings but this has not resolved the problem. The noise seems to be coming from inside the drum. I can feel a high pitched vibration on the drum casing when the noise happens. I thought it may be a brake shoe binding. I would be grateful for any suggestions as to what it might be and how i can fix it.
Does anyone know the correct procedure for completely removing and dismantling the drum assembly.
    Many thanks.

It sounds like you have a bra-wire stuck in between the drum & tank. Usually wraps itself around the heater & catching on the drum as it turns. Shining a torch through the drum holes whilst turning the drum back & forth will show you whats stuck inside. You can gain access by either removing the heater element from the rear or the sump hose. Failing that, the front of the tank comes off by removing spring clips from the the front of the tank.

Thanks very much for your suggestions. I had thought it might be a bra wire because i’ve had that problem before. I will certainly have a look once more this time using a torch as you suggested. The noise seems to be a mid range frequency and I would have expected a bra wire to make a high frequency ‘squeal’.
Do you know if the front of the drum assembly can be removed while it is still in the machine.

    Thanks again

No need to take the whole tank out. Just remove the front panel. Un-plug from the mains first. Release door seal fixing band, fold in the door seal. Unplug the door lock. 2 screws at bottom of front panel & one hiding behind soap drawer handle. Front panel will just pull away from the bottom & then drop away. You then get full access to the front of the tank.

Thanks for that. Sounds like you’ve done quite a bit of work on one of these. I’m hoping I won’t need to take the front of the drum off but that’s a great reference for the future. I’m in the middle of decorating at the moment but I’ll certainly work on your suggestions as soon as I can.
    Thanks again

Problem solved. It was a failed bearing in the motor. I sourced a new bearing from a local supplier and fitted it after solving a couple of extra problems. Everything working normally now.
Wife isn’t too impressed; she was hoping I’d finally agree to a new machine.

I wouldn’t change that machine unless absolutely necessary. The old saying “they don’t make em’ like they used to” really does apply in your case. Most new washers have moulded plastic tanks, where as yours is a stainless steel tank with a cast iron bearing cross. Your machine is much more robust than most newer models & should out last them as well 😀

Re: Bosch WFK 2801 washing machine noisy spin

Thanks for your comments trikidik. The machine has worked fine for a couple of days but this morning has developed a massive out of balance that rocks the machine and stops the spin cycle. I can’t think it has anything to do with what i did to repair the motor. Any ideas, please.

Re: Bosch WFK 2801 washing machine noisy spin

I have tried a short spin cycle with nothing in the machine. It starts to spin for only a few revs then stops, then continues doing that until the end of the cycle. I did notice when I dismantled the motor that the brushes were only about 10-12 mm long. Do you think that replacing the brushes may help the problem??

Re: Bosch WFK 2801 washing machine noisy spin

Think I’ve found the problem. When I removed the bearing from the motor I unfortunately snapped the magnetic sensor ring in two. I fixed it back onto the motor shaft using araldite. That worked for a couple of days but I have now discovered that the araldite has failed and the magnet has become detached again. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement magnet, please.

The chances are that the tacho magnet is not available as a separate part.

If not then its new motor or a trawl around to see if you can find a magnet from a discarded motor or machine. 😥

Re: Bosch WFK 2801 washing machine noisy spin

I might have found a solution. Unibond do a 2 part putty that sets rock hard. I molded it round the magnet on the shaft, then when it was set, trimmed away just enough for the outer part of the tacho to be fitted. The magnet is still fully encased in the putty. The machine is running fine at the moment. Fingers crossed.
