ParticipantOur admiral american style fridge freezer has started playing up today. The fridge section is not cooling but the freezer section seems fine. This is a single compressor model as far as I know, so can anyone give me some clues what I might look at ?
Thanks

It’s about 8 years old.
One idea I’ve found from hunting around is that the evaporator coils could be iced up if something has gone wrong with the defrost mechanisms. I’ll have a look tonight.August 3, 2010 at 9:57 pm #326688tonyb61

I removed the panel at the back of the freezer compartment, and indeed the coils are very iced up. Not sure why the freezer still seems cold but the fridge section is much warmer.
Anyway have defrosted coils and seeing if better.
If ok, then I need to find out why the coils iced up, which could be the heater, thermostat or timer ? I can see the heater and thermostat. but does anyone have any idea where the timer might be ?

After deicing coils fridge working ok.
Checked heater/thermostat which are wired in series, and when cold about 100 ohms, and after freezer reached room temp resistance was 6Mohms plus. I think this means heater and thermostat are operating so my problem must be the defrost timer ? But I can’t find this anywhere ?
I’ve looked where the defrost heater is behind freezer section, under the control panel at the top of the fridge compartment, and at the back where the compressor is, but no sign of it ?
Can anyone help ❓August 5, 2010 at 6:47 am #326690ELDAR59

hi tony, the timer on this model is in the top of the fridge, on the right hand side.
pull the top cover down and the timer is in a box, as i say, top right.
you say you’ve checked the heater?
when cold you should get a reading through the stat and the heater, but when warm the reading should be about 250k ohms, not sure about 6 meg??
in terms of probability, it’s likely that the fault is with the heater/stat assembly and not the timer.cheers.

I rechecked the heater with the ohmmeter, and it did seem to be open circuit. I have replaced it and I will see how it goes.
