Hi. I have reset the thermostat on my tumble dryer and it popped again. I purchased a genuine pair of new ones and ensured I didn’t touch the foil side and replaced them. The tumble dryer gave out heat but a little while later tripped the stat again. I have checked for fluff, cleaned the condensor and ensured the fan blade spins correctly and is not turning on the drive shaft. What I have noticed is the lower pair of heater elements are not glowing where as the top pair are. I have used a multimeter and confirmed both pairs are getting 240V AC so should both be glowing. Resistance at room temperature of both pairs are approx 42 ohms and 21 ohms each bar. This to me would indicate the heater element has the lower pair not working, but cannot really understand how this would trip the thermostats, unless the higher pair are working harder and getting hotter to compensate. Any help you can offer is much appreciated.
    Cheers

When the stats are in good order and you set the programme dial does the heater light come on before you push the start button?

If it does then you have a dryness module failure.

Live testing, particularly with the back cover off is not advisable, it sounds as though both elements are fine.

Hi. Thank you for the advice. When both thermostats are in good order the red drying light does come on. The dryer has been working ok for the last few tries and now has stopped blowing hot air and the red light does not illuminate when switching on. Is the dryness module a relatively easy/cheap replacement or is it worthwhile buying a new dryer? Do you know if this is a common incident and what does this module do? Thanks again for your excellent advice.

Re: TDC62 Hotpoint tumble dryer tripping new thermostats

Its important to note if the heater light comes on when the programme is selected but before the start button is pressed with good stats. Once the stat has tripped the light will not come on.

It is quite a common fault on these.

If it does it is definitely a faulty dryness module. This controls the electronic sensing of the drying cycle. If the relay on the PCB sticks then the heater stays on all the time leading to thermostat failure.

Sadly the few companies that repair PCB’s don’t seem to do this one.

New its over £85.00 ex vat. 😥

I have not heard of anyone successfully replacing the heater relay on these PCB’s either.

Thank you so much. I think a new dryer is the best bet, as to spend that amount of money replacing the module on a dryer that is some years old now would be better spent by adding a little more and buying a new one. Thanks again for your excellent advice.

As long as its not another Hotpoint, their new ones are not a patch on the one you have.

If it really has to be a condensor dryer then of the current crop Zanussi or Bosch would be my choice.

Re: TDC62 Hotpoint tumble dryer tripping new thermostats

Hi, have just seen these post whilst trying to identify the prob with my machine. I had intermittent heat, when i set a program working it would be ok to begin and after a while I would notice that there was no heat even though drying light lit, I discovered tapping the side restored the heat. then after a few weeks of this the tapping when needed was no longer effective, and I also noticed that when I selected the programme before pressing start the drying light was already lit which I knew was not the norm but didn’t know if it meant anything. I know the back thermostats are fine. I’ve since took the top and side panels off to see if there was any obvious faults, hoovered away a small amount of fluff and generally wiggled connections etc. Now when I select a programme the drying light does not light up until i press start, ie how it normally is, but alas no heat 🙁
Help please – what can I check next to find out what the prob is?
Thanks in advance for any help

    Your dryness module is faulty.
