KeymasterHi,
I’m trying to save a 10 yr old machine from the scrap heap by spending a lot of DIY hours . I’ve just about totally dismantled this machine to get at the spider holding the bearings & triple lip seal.(Don’t know how you blokes make a quid fixing these things up)
I’ve installed new bearings and shaft seal to the outer drum spider but how do I get the shaft seal to locate in the outer drum with the shaft from the inner drum poking through?
Should I dismantle and separate the inner & outer drums then attach the outer spider and pass the shaft through?
There is a band that holds the porthole end of the drum on (seems to have a concrete ring attached somehow)Cheers, Pedro

Pedro,
I assume you are referring to a WFB1605 😕
If that is the case then the ‘Drum Spigot’ (which houses the bearings and water seal) does fairly easily slide over the drum shaft, with perhaps a light application of high speed grease onto the shaft. 😉
One needs to gently tap the spigot into position whilst at the same time pulling the drum shaft through. Once you have fully located the bolts onto the 4 spigot leg fixings, you should be able to attach the drum pulley and bolt it into position.
There is no need to remove the inner/outer drum from the cabinet in order to do this. It is all done from the back and the top 🙂
Hope that helps?

Thanks for the prompt reply Martin,
Yes it is a WFB1605. I’ve already removed the drum assembly from the cabinet because that’s what the local repair guy advised.
The spigot did come off the shaft fairly easily but the seal appears to pass through the hole so the lip seals on both sides of the outer drum. This looks as though it may be difficult with the shaft already poking through the hole.
How do you get the seal into position without damaging it? 😯Cheers,

I’ve looked at it again and maybe I’ve got it all wrong. 🙄
The seal is installed in the 4 legged spigot and I thought the innermost seal lips passed through the hole of the outer drum but now i’m thinking that the 2 lips of the seal just press up against the outer face of the drum.
I’m re-using the old seal as the local service guy couldn’t supply a new one.
Should I use silicone sealer when I reassemble?Cheers,

You must ensure you fit a new seal (Bosch Part No: 036071 Cost around £3 available via our “Help desk”) otherwise the bearings will go again in less than 6 months 🙁

Certainly not, no glue/sealant must be used whatsoever!

Thanks for the part No. and advice Martin.
I’m not in the UK so will try and source the part locally, if not I have some relatives there that may be able to ship it for me.
My local supplier only sells the complete bearing, seal, spigot assembly which is about 75 quid.
( Is this a seal common to other brands(hoover, bendix, etc)?
I’m surprised it’s lasted 9 years but I guess this type of seal is always going to fail eventually.
Now that most machines have a molded plastic outer bowl do you know what type of seal is used & is it more effective?Regards,

Sorry Martin that part number is for thermostat sender seal on models where the sender fits at front of tub under the weight.
Bosch “quickfinder” does not list seperate seal or bearings for these spanish made models only the bearing cross complete.

The best way to identify the seal is read the numbers off of the seal itself in the format ??x??x?? then order one either from a specialist bearing supplier or from RS components, the url for the seal section is:
although they don’t stock all sizes.

OK Guys now I am confused 😕
It’s uneconomical for me to buy a complete assembly to repair this machine(maybe that’s what Bosch want) as it will soon need a new door seal and brushes as well. But if some-one can supply me with the correct part No. or substitute non-genuine part No. then maybe it can be saved from the rubbish dump.
How do you get around this problem in your workshops?
I don’t understand why Bosch list bearing kits for many of their washers but not thids model 😯regards,

Pedro,
Sorry I screwed up on the Bearing Seal part number I’m afraid 😳
Water Seals can be obtained here in the UK from Bearing/Seal suppliers. What is needed are the numbers embossed on the seal to be sure of getting the right type though?
The reason the Spigot comes as an assembled unit c/w bearings and seal is that the machine was MADE FOR BOSCH by another manufacturer in Spain on the cheap!
