ParticipantEvery time I log onto UKWG there is someone asking a question about a fault that has been asked several times before and has well documented answers. Which makes it quite obvious that some individuals have not used the search facility, most likely can’t be bothered.
It frustrates everyone who contributes and offer advice, several of them are the moderators who I would imagine have better things to do with their time than doing the research for those who can’t be bothered.I am a member of several forums on the net and it’s the same throughout, so it’s not isolated to this site, but remember, we are making a living with the help on UKWG.
So people lets use the “SEARCH” facility, if you don’t know where it is, it’s at the top of the forums page, maybe we should have a bigger “search” button, moderators.

Maybe a large pop up that appears when you click new post
“USE THE B*****Y SEARCH BUTTON”
might help 😆

Please also re-read my “sticky” about how to make searching easier. The more efficient a search is the more people will use it.
And I agree the search box should be right there next to the “new topic” button. Then we could all get our lives back!

point taken but sometimes the topic has been covered without reference to any key words. how many times do you see posts without any model or pnc numbers? you end up trawling through lots of stuff with failing hope of a result.

Key words (& numbers) are essential within the search facility ’tis true and the results are often inconclusive at best, disappointing at worst. The point Mal was making was that the vast majority using this site fail to notice or even use the ‘search facility’ at all!!! And time & time again they need guiding toward that ruddy button in order to prevent them posting the same questions day in day out ad infinitum when the answer can be so easily found within that Search facility. :rolls:
Statistically I’m certain that in the public forums the most asked question is : “the drum’s not turning, what should I be looking at?” And in the trade forums : “customer says the lights are flashing, what’s the error code?” Hence my cryptic take on the big button solution. 🙂

Hi Wilf,
Have you read the sticky I referred to in my post above?
If not, please follow this link.
I did a search for posts from you in the trade tech forum and found 306 matches.
On the first page of those (50 threads containing your name) I found twelve threads started by you. The very last one was on July 30th.
Most of those twelve posts do at least give model numbers and appliance types :tright: . They don’t, though, mention what fault you have. So you still have some work to do by my reckoning. Still, if everybody did as well as you’re doing so far, things would already be better. IN MY OPINION.

I have to say Mal that the ointment I gave you is clearing those spots up nicely, I’m sure you must agree? 😀

You’re not doing anything wrong. But given the careless way most people compose their question titles, you’ve got to widen your search by putting in fewer words. If I get no results with the model number, I leave that out and search for make + fault (e.g. “Bosch + 1 min”) This usually gets you some relevant results because lots of different models have the same faults. If people would write clear and fully descriptive thread titles the forum would be about three times as useful as it is already.

I always use the search first but you don’t always find the smaller detail the you are looking for. 🙁
On saying that there are times when it spells it out to you very clearly. 😀
