just a quickie, has anyone got any bumf / figures etc regarding testign the sole motors on these?

replaced carbons on it as they were almost down to the cartridge shells hooked it all back up and no response. late evening call, so bit tired, and forgot to check continuity before putting it back on, anyway whipped back out, inspected carboms and chamfers seem pretty flat, and werent making enough contact. refitted them, and spent next 20-30 mins later of hand-spinning the drum to bed them in a bit.

fire up the machine again and get the odd crackle of arcing, nothing u dont normally get on any other motor, and then as it started to ramp up u could hear massive arcing and nasty hot electrical smell. before i could stop it the motor died, and a sniff over the pcb confirmed warmth.

thing is theres no burn outs / dry joints and board is still taking diagnostic inputs, so might have gotten away with that, just wondered if anyone else has had bad carbons cause this or is it more terminal and the armatures shot ? i could get continuity between each segment if tested directly on the armature, but not if i tested it thru the carbons, as continuity would dissapear in 3 random points during one rotation.

and i couldnt find anythign in the service manuals on mediator to help either 🙁

You meantioned “continuity” 3 times but was that just using a multimeter or an insulation tester (Megger)???

Sounds like a duff segment in the motor

i only had the multimeter with me at the time as job was tacked on to the delivery schedule as it was urgent, so not insulation tested it yet.

and he wants me to keep an eye out for a s/h motor 🙁

Sounds like the motor is completely shot. Lucky if you didn’t blow the board.
There are so many different Sole motors for Zanussi it would be a nightmare to find the right one s/h. If he won’t pay for a new motor, give him the old motor and tell him to search e-bay for himself. (Notwithstanding that somebody on here could possibly have broken one of these up recently.)

are you implying you have a 1600rpm motor mikey??? 😀

(at £210 i dont blame him – i wouldnt even pay £125 net for a new motor if it was my own machine, as its already seen its best years – 6+ years old)

just customers who are tight really, dont wanna buy a new one dont wanna pay the parts they need for it, all about a massive cake and eating all of it…

Sadly, no. I was more implying that another post in spares or classifieds might be worth a try. But it would be unlikely to succeed because fewer people read those forums, I should think.
💡 Would be good if there was some sort of, “currently wanted list” side panel on main pages which would kind of throb to attract everybody’s attention. Then we could claim even more that this site is, “helping the planet.”
But it must be a lot of work to make cahnges to the layout of the site. Not moaning really, but haven’t seen any sign of the big new search button yet.
    Mike.
