Hope you can assist with this one. Last year roast potatoes got burnt in the main oven.Tried to switch off using the main oven switch, but the oven stayed on: presumably the thermostat had malfunctioned. I wasn’t in a position to change the stat at that time so we continued to use the top oven only, which works well – as does the halogen hob. But…when using said top oven,we have to run it in auto default mode (3 flashing zeros plus auto symbol on the timer screen) If we try to set the time of day,the main oven element switches on and glows bright red, despite the fact that the main oven temp control/on-off switch is turned OFF. The same thing happens when we press the MANUAL button. Immediately we turn on the main oven switch, the fan kicks in and cools the element – although no thermostatic switching occurs due to aforementioned duff stat. The worrying thing is that when using the top oven in auto default mode, the flashing clock rolls forward and at around 2 hours 40 mins, that main oven element slyly switches on and starts to glow red, despite the main oven switch being OFF. So we quickly switch off at the mains supply and then switch on again – which resets the clock to 3 flashing zeros. Phew! You have to have your wits about you with this particular Belling cooker!
I see you have 647ST main oven stats for sale – Ours is a 647SS but I’m guessing it’s the same. I’d like to think that a new main oven stat would eliminate all the above issues. Do you agree? If so,what’s the quickest way to reach the stat inside the cooker?
Finally this machine is 6 years old and has always been used in MANUAL mode.
Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: BELLING FORMAT 647. MAIN OVEN ANTICS

sorry to ask this but WHY have you continued to use an oven that is clearly malfunctioning for a YEAR? would you drive a car that had a warning light flashing for a year without getting it checked out?

apart from anything else its a clear fire risk, and you have been lucky not to meet a firefighter on call…! and u may think this is an exreme reaction but fires occuring from this is more common than you may think as my delivery driver is a reserve firefighter

click the find an engineer link below, and do not leave your cooker cooking unsupervised until they can sort it out for you!

Thanks for your reply, gandh 1. And your points are well noted. Serious family circumstances prevented any action being taken re this cooker until now. Muddled thinking was that as the top oven and grill were working normally,we could get by with it temporarily. Perhaps not that muddled though…because the Belling was constantly monitored during cooking and was always switched off at the mains supply once the cooking session ended

Probably,by doing this,we not only eliminated the fire risk, but also prevented the main oven fan element from burning out. DEFINITELY not recommended to readers here though!

Follow-up to my original Sept 29th post.

Bought a main oven thermostat for 28-odd quid, spent 90 minutes carrying out the first- time replacement procedure and…hey presto – we have a fully operational Belling Format cooker.

Next time it happens,I estimate a stat replacement time of 45 minutes.

Hope there’s a small crumb of comfort here for Format owners contending with a failed thermostat.
