ParticipantThese are the choices I have narrowed it down to, but I have two big obstacles to helping me get the information I need to make a decision:
1. I am in New Zealand! Which means very limited choices and everything is expensive
2. I am American, which means I am not familiar with most of the brands available here.I am a very serious cook and baker and want a duel fuel range that will last me the rest of my life. I want to buy a really good one and then take it with me when we sell this house. So it is a harrowing decision, especially with my top choice, the Falcon, at $10,000 NZD! (currently 4700 British pounds, not counting GST, installation and delivery!) with the really good looking Ilve costing about the same.
I am pretty sure models are similar to the UK, so in Smeg I am considering either the SA9066 or CS91 Series. In Ilve, the Quadra, Titanium or Nostalgie series, and the Falcon Continental 900S.
My questions are around performance and durability. The Falcons seem to be extremely popular and highly recommended in these forums, but I have not seen any comparisons to these other brands, only to other UK models not available here.
Any and all input will be very much appreciated. I am used to loads of online user information, and it is just non-existent here so I feel really in the dark :rolls:
Thanks! Susan

Hi Susan
Falcon range cookers are very well thought of here in the UK for being a quality machine. Ilve on the other hand isn’t represented here as it’s an Australian brand by the looks of it, as for the Smeg models quoted they are also exclusive to your neck of the woods.
Moved you down to the Australian forum as there are a few posters down there who may be able to offer you a more detailed answer on the brands and models in question.
HTH 🙂

Thanks Don! that’s brilliant, I didn’t know you had an Australasian forum! A much better place for me to get my info!

This is great, I have had so much trouble finding user input and since we have pretty much the same models as in Australian at least now I can get some really accurate feedback!
So can we please add Ariston to the mix? I have seen some great looking Ariston ranges, at amazing prices, and now that I see they are being used on Masterchef, I wonder, are they any good?
Thanks! Susan

Ariston is actually Indesit, enter either name in the search box and it will tell you all you need to know about Ariston/Indesit quality. :rolls:
In fact the trade side of this forum find it hard to believe that Ariston is sold as ‘up market’ in Australia.

Thats a tall order, if I wasn’t such a gentleman I would ask how old you are. 😆

I almost added “and I’m not that young” to my post! so it doesn’t have all that long that it has to last! Besides, with something as beefy as a Falcon, shouldn’t it last a lifetime even for a younger person? 😉

Even though it’s a different model in the UK, can I get some feedback on Smeg quality please? The models I am considering are mid line and top of the line here. Ilve, btw, is Italian. And I hear a lot about “hand made” as a big selling feature, both on the Ilve and the top end Smeg. I don’t find that impressive necessarily – any opinion on that? (sad to say but machines do a better job at building machines than humans)
Thanks,

A thread on Falcon HERE
In the UK Falcon is considered top quality, Smeg very much mid range quality and Ariston very much low end, budget appliances.

Thanks for that link, the information there is just what I am after. And I particularly appreciated Kwatt’s comments about Americans 😆

I am service repairer in Oz
Smeg/Omega Stoves here do have there common faults
Hinges (The hinges are not strong enough for the larger /heavier doors), elements, big problems with clocks Customer feed back generally not good
But in saying that Smeg service backup in Oz is very good
Ilve hard to get parts Parts very expensive parts average bulid
Ariston average Stoves
Falcon seem to better built There are not to many of these Stoves in market place here Have only worked on couple hard to give overall feedbackOctober 6, 2010 at 3:44 am #332063zsuzsanna22

thanks for that info. it’s great to get some feedback from down under! I have heard that about the Ilve, that they break down and that parts are difficult and expensive too. But the salespeople here sure do sell them hard! (which always makes me suspicious)
