F&P MW059AU washing machine – no code?

Sorry to do the classic “register then instantly post a fault”. Our F&P SmartDrive 9 has been making a loud whining noise when pumping since forever, I had just accepted it as inevitable. However this morning it simply makes a low humming noise when it should be draining, and emitted a steady series of beeps which kept going until I switched it off.
Searching this forum I found information about putting it into diagnostic mode, which seems to work, but I am well confused.
When I press the spin speed button until slow and hold are both lit, there are no LEDs lit above the panel. Does this mean I have somehow cleared whatever error was there?
