ParticipantI know we have all sent customers in the direction of QER, EMW and HJM etc to get their electronic parts repaired directly. Please bear in mind they are “trade” suppliers and we shouldn’t be letting this possible revenue slip past IMO.
I am more than happy to deal with these on behalf of the customers and it will also earn UKW a little extra each time as we can make a profit on these.
Slap me about if I’m in the wrong 😉

KeymasterNope, I was thinking much the same TBH, I didn’t think they would deal with the general public at all.
Best have a word with them then and see if they want to do things that way I guess. But for the moment I think it’s a sound plan.

OK, so do we use a prefered supplier and strike up a deal ?
I have dealt with all three over the years and have found the following:
QER – By far the largest range, fairly good stock level, generaly very reliable, the most expensive, also not so good when it comes to the exchange unit as they charge a surcharge before the old part is returned.
HJM – The cheapest by a mile, reliabilty OK but below QER, not fussy about returned exchanges, only repair washing machine timers and modules.
EMW – Someone else can finish this one, I haven’t dealt with them for years as they were too expensive compared to HJM and reliabilty on Hotpoint timers was dismal at the time.
Feedback ?

KeymasterI’ve not used any of them at all TBH for many a long year being 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} contract work, but if they can do Smeg D/W timers I may give them a try for the chargeable repairs.

Steady on Dave don’t put yourself in the firing line on this 😉
Generally it is best we do NOT put the general public in touch with the 3 companies. They are indeed trade only (preferred but I think most will fix anyones Timer or Module 😕 ) as the trade fully understands the position regarding how to deal with other likely aspects of repairs involving Modules and the repercussions etc.
Those we have so far mentioned getting the repairs done have been pretty isolated and almost certainly they would’nt be able to fix them anyway (i.e The De Dietrich Oven Module recently I recall?…bit of a no no that one I reckon)
If you take on acting as ‘third party’ for the public, in getting there duff Module fixed for the sake of a little ‘mark-up’ I think it hardly worth the agro, handling costs, postage etc. etc. Not a good idea.
As for the three companies concerned I agree with Dave’s comments. QER very expensive but loads stock. EMW very efficient, no probs on returns etc. HJM cheapest of the lot, very good, not a great stock and also not up with the latest problems (i.e Indishit Modules etc 😉 )

Indeed, but it’s better than telling a customer to bugger off, at least we are seen to be trying, even if we do know it’s pretty much a lost cause. 😉
Thing is though, with the increase in modules and electronic timers at least we can offer such a service and I think it is a reasonable thing to do. All we can do is try it and see how it goes, as I keep saying, nothing was ever lost by trying. 🙂

I’ve been doing it for years Martin for my own customers and I always charge the postage etc back to the customer and make sure the mark up is sufficient to cover the packing etc.
It is no longer viable on most of the early modules I agree as manufacturers have brought the price of these down, but it is on cooker clocks, timer/module hybrids and other large pcb’s.
ATEOTD if the customer wants to pay who am I to argue, the hassle factor is built in to the price 😉

ParticipantI think if you ask Tony_EMW you will find that he does charge the public rather more.
I’ve used EMW for years with rarely a problem. We do use QER, but their success rate on anything vaguely unusual is very low.
I you act as the middle man for the public BTW, where will you finish with regard to guarantees?

are EMW and QER not the same group?
I seem to remember a sort of joining together a while ago….

Liable to uphold whatever guarantee the repair company gives us normally, although I do always inform of blown tracks etc that are caused by external sources may not be covered as the fault may have been misdiagnosed or overlooked.

KeymasterWith refurbs, what sort of guarantee do you give with the repair compared to using a new component and what type of guarantee do these companies give to the trade. Also does this guarantee follow with over the counter sales ?

ParticipantRe: Refurbs
Most offer a 12 month guarantee, i would personally push for this if we were to use a prefered supplier of refurbished parts.
If we are to offer any company increased revenue through increased sales of their products via UKW, they would have to offer a 12 month warranty and either offer a discount to allow the return of faulty parts or credit the postage, easiest way is by pre-paid return stickers.
Keep the comments coming ;
