ParticipantHi,
I have a Hotpoint WM53 first edition 1200, whilst in use last week, there was an electrical bang and the ring main tripped.
I have checked the fuse on the washer, its okay, but the machine appears dead, would i be correct in thinking the timer control board has gone pop.Eddie.

Could be one of a number of things. I’d check the door lock and motor first – if it’s the GEC motor these were notorious for blowing segments on the armature. Unlikely the timer would go for no reason, though, but do check it as both motor and or door lock are more than capable of taking the timer out.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the reply, the motor has no manufacturer name on it, but heres a pic of the label on it.

Whats the method for checking the motor, i do have a multimeter.
Eddie.

WITH POWER OFF remove & check brushes. Run your finger along the armature inside and turn the motor – if you feel any raised segments the armature is knackered.
Did you check the timer? Any blackened tracks near the connectors? If so trace the wires back to find the faulty component.

Hi Chris,
Right then pic of timer board shows 1st track evaporated, this leads to the door lock, there is also a burn mark on the edge connector (Sorry you can see this with the plug in place) this leads to the cold water solonoid, but the track seems to be in place, i guess this is the path of least resistance that has caused that.

Got a working timer board from a well known auction site for 99p, am now going to order a door interlock switch as well.
Do you think i am on the right lines with this.
Many thanks,
Eddie.

A very common failure caused by the door lock.
There are quite a few different control units for Hotpoint WM models, yours is a 1603787, they are not all interchangeable.
