ParticipantHi, i am new to this site and was hoping to get some help on a problem with my washing machine (i meant wifes).
the problem started a couple of weeks ago with the machine not finnishing the spin cycle at the end of a program. The lights and the spin speed indicator kept on flashing in cycles of three, and i found on the internet that it meant that the drum was not emptying even though it was, the problem seemed to be intermittent as the machine would then with a bit of turning on and off and trying different washes would work for a while completing its cycle. finally on waking one morning last week we no electric, the machine had been put on timer the night before and when it was due to start its program it decided to trip the circuit breaker for the sockets.
Anyway has anyone reading this gone any idea what may be wrong, the machine is a Hoover VHD 8160.
Thanks in advance.November 2, 2010 at 9:09 pm #334862spanishwhite

The error code is indicating a drain time out fault.Although the machine is emptying it could be taking longer to drain than it should.Obviously a partial blockage in tha drain system could cause this.
Check the filter for obstructions.November 3, 2010 at 12:27 am #334863helo_75
Participantand i wouldnt be shocked if the heater was faulty as well
even more so since it tripped the switch

Thanks for the replies, i have had the drain pump off and checked the pipes and they seem clear. I also had the heater out recently to clear a bra wire from between the drum and outer drum, what would i be looking for on the heater? would it have a split on the element like one i replaced on my immesion heater some years back or could it be something not visible. thanks again Paul.

Participantit wouldnt always be visible… but its a known problem for heaters to cause that issue if the pump and pipework are clear!
best test is with a suitable megger
id just change it if the drain side of things is ok

hi, today i pulled the 3 wires from the heater and switched the machine on and it didn’t the the RCD, so put them back and it did trip again. without the heater connected i tried a spin cycle and it seemed to complete without a problem so i removed the heater completely to have a look at it and noticed 2 deep score marks on it about the width of a bra wire. could that be enough to trip the rcd and to cause an error to do with not draining?

I fitted a new heater on friday, all seems to be ok (fingers crossed) sp far. I still do understand why the machine would show a draining error if the heating element was faulty but i dont suppose that matters now that it is working.
Thanks for the suggestions that helped me fix our machine.

Dont know about Hoover error codes but were the score marks in the same position on each “leg” of the heater? If so, they could have been made by the inner drum (classic Hotpoint fault). Either the bearings could be going or the drum support could be cracked allowing the inner drum to wobble enough to rub on the heater.

My machine is still running as it should be, the two score marks were on the curved part at the end and were the width of a bra wire which i removed from the drum. the machine had done a fast spin cycle and was making a nasty noise whilst running, that’s why i thought it was caused by the wire.
