1 + 3 is supposed to signify blocked filters.

You might be able to clear it by cleaning out all of the filters in the sump and then running it on the hottest cycle with a dishwasher cleaner.

Can also be blocked pressure switch pipe or flow sensor, often caused by failure to rinse the dishes properly before loading.

Parkerlaw the Butts eh, not Rochdale by any chance? 😉

    Re: IDL40 Flashing 1 and 3

I have what sounds like a similar problem, flashing lights 1 and 3 on the same Indesit model. My machine is 18 months old, and has recently been moved. It worked fine for about a week after the move, and stopped working yesterday. It fills, makes another noise for about 20 seconds and just about the time I hear it emptying, lights 1 and 3 flash.

I’ve removed the filter assemblage. There was a tiny piece of fluff caught in one of the filters, but nothing else. I took it apart and cleaned it anyway. Then I made up a solution of 1 tsp bicarb in a cup of cold water, and poured it into the reservoir below the filter. Then added a tablespoon or so of vinegar. Watched it bubble for five minutes, then tried the cycle again with the same result – It filled, then emptied, and flashed 1 and 3.

So it’s an older machine and I know from the hour or so spent searching for answers here, this model is prone to problems. Still, if I can coax a bit of life from it, I’m game. Can anyone suggest a next step or steps? (Other than landfill, I mean.)

    Thanks in advance.

I’m afraid all the tales of bicarb and vinegar are snake oil solutions. 😉

Try a good dishwasher cleaner on the hottest cycle if you can get it to run one that is.

The flow meter can cause this fault as well, not easy to access, sits right under the lower spray arm.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

Seriously, I didn’t hold a lot of hope for the bicarb, but thought I might as well give it a try. Dishwasher cleaner isn’t likely to work, as the machine empties too quickly. It won’t run a full cycle.

Is the flow meter really the very next thing you’d try? Rats. I was so hoping for an easy fix.

Okay then. I’m guessing we get to the flow metre through the bottom of the unit. Other than the bottom pan, is there anything I need to remove in order to get to the flow metre? What does it look like? And what do I do with it when I find it?

    Re: IDL40 Flashing1 and 3

TBH I’ve never had to change one, its a small device pushed into a little bulbous hose directly between the main circulation pump and the lower spray arm.

Only access is from underneath, its also possible that a failing main circulation pump could give the same fault.

If your model number is actually IDL40C then it has the added ‘bonus’ :rolls: of being made in China. 😥

Yes, I can confirm the dreaded “C” after the model number. The full number is IDL40 UK.C. and if that weren’t enough, it even says Made in China on the sticker inside the door.

In just a few short hours I’ve spent reading these forums I’ve gleaned enough to know that this machine probably isn’t worth what it would cost to get a Trained Professional out to fix it. But I’ve got a friend coming over tomorrow who’s good with electrics, and willing to help. Where’s the pump, and how do I test to see if it’s failing? Pump cost is, I know dependent on the model number, but I’d appreciate a ballpark, if you have one. I’m not sure which of these is the model number, but here are the numbers on that sticker inside the door.

Finally, is there a thread here called “What dishwasher should I buy?” Something tells me I’m going to need it. 😉

All of the gubbins is fairly obvious from underneath.

Generally poor wash performance or lack of a good flow from the spray arms would indicate a main pump failure. Not worth putting a main pump in one of these.

The Bosch stuff is about the best mid range kit ATM.

Hi guys you may find if its not the filters that are the cause then it certainly will be the pressure release valve pipe. This is located on the right hand side at the machine at the bottom. Just remove the side panel (there are about ten screws to remove with a Phillips screwdriver). You will then see a round unit with a black pipe of about 12-15mm diameter. Pull it off the unit and give it a good hard blow, if it’s blocked you should be able to clear it easily. The blockage will blow back into the filter reservoir and I would recommend sucking it out with a wet and dry vac to be sure. Then refill the reservoir with a little water before reassembling and running the machine. I have done his myself after watching a repair man do it last year and it works.

Strange, there is no such component as a pressure release valve on this appliance. ❓ ❓

Do you mean the pressure switch?
