I work for a large housing association and we carry out kitchen replacement programmes on our managed student accomodation properties.

Over three years as well as a supply of kitchen units etc we have purchased 80 electric built in ovens from a well known company I wont name.

We have had issues when carrying out Portable Appliance Testing that quite a large percentage of the oven housings have become charred quite badly. The ovens were installed correctly into these housings by an independant electrician to the supplier.

We called back the supplier who sent their appliance specialists. They attributed the failure of the insulative lining of these ovens down to tin foil being placed in the bottom of them. The foil was placed there at the start of each term by cleaners, to make the job easier of cleaning them at the end of the term.

Speaking to an appliance engineer we regularly use in another part of the country he felt this could not be possible, or certainly hadnt heard of this happening in his 20yrs experience.

I have retained some of these ovens and wish to have an independant test carried out – preferrably by a Body rather than another appliance engineer who’s word may not carry much clout to a National company.

I have heard of DASA but dont know whether these would be appropriate or willing to help? The ovens supplied over three years were similar with slight model number change, but we have experienced trouble across each model number. So maybe tin foil is the issue……??

I also realise students are not the best at looking after appliances or kitchens but this is directly attributable to scorching. I have the report but do not wish to make it public on a forum but may be available on request if anyone is interested.

    Hi,

Your best bet is Intertek for that sort of thing, you can find them here: http://www.intertek.com/appliances-electronics/

Do not be surprised if it costs a bit though.

Can you be a little more specific as to what area of the oven housings get charred? Presumably you refer to standard MDF built-in oven carcases?

If you imagine the 600mm oven housing which the oven sits on below worktop….guess its mdf of sorts with a veneer. The base of this which the oven sits on is charred in areas. The oven does sit off it on feet, and there is ventilation to rear and at top of oven where it sits just under worktop.

I will try and post a picture of an example when I download them.
