ParticipantThe pump has failed. It’s less than a year old, but as I cannot trace the receipt, MR are only offering a discount on a replacement. I’d rather find a better pump for it. Anyone have any idea where I can get such a thing?

Hi Kate
If you paid by creidt / debit card or cheque then the statement may suffice as proof of purchase.
Failing that I would visit the retailer where it was purchased. Most retailers will have an exchange policy in place and if you play nice then you may get a result 😉
There are no parts that I can find available from any of our suppliers, so I guess it’s exchange only in the first year.
If all that fails then I guess the Morphy option is about as good as it gets.
HTH 🙂

Unfortunately I bought it online from one of those places that sells returned and reconditioned items, so, while it was ‘new’ when I got it, it isn’t covered by any guarantee. I suppose I learned my lesson, but I did need a cheap on in a hurry at that point.
I think Himself (being an engineering type) is going to try bypassing the water softening arrangement, as this seems to be the cause of the problem (or rather, where the problem of not having a decent pump manifests itself!). I’m not bothered by having the water softening thing, as we have a water softener fitted to the house.
I’m not at all pleased with MR’s wasteful attitude, and am looking in the longer term for something more robust and repairable: something built for workshop use, as I am a dress and costume maker.

KeymasterHi Kate,
I had a look for this last night and I can’t find any spares for it at all being available were I’d expect them to be found.
It could be an exclusive, could be a non-UK model and that’s why it wouldn’t show but it’s looking as if you’re really going to struggle to get parts I’m afraid.

ken m/r are pita’s as far as any repair is concerned. spare parts are basically limited to consumables. something to do with the contract with the chinese manufacturing plant, in order to keep costs down, its cheaper for them to replace a whole unit at cost, than pay for the sorting, packaging, and storage of even just a handful of the numerous parts that make it up. fact that the common electrical failures like switches cables etc can be sourced from other brands or independantly.
have tried on numerous occasions to get parts for their vacs and steam gens and all end with the same response, if its out of guarantee, they will offer a discount off list price if you deal direct with them, in orde to keep you as a customer. if its in warranty and the retailer cannot replace. they will replace from stock or replace to same or higher spec upon proof of purchase. its good from customer service point of view, and to be fair, m/r are good company to deal with as a retailer, due to their relatively quibble free 2 year p&l warranty on brand new perfect goods…
if it helps we did manage to repair a m/r steam gen using tefal stats, iirc, but not advisable unless you know what your doing. but to be honest steam gens these days dont seem to see out more than 2-3 years at most, so it might be worth budgeting for half of one every 2 years, and make sure you get one with a 2 year guarantee, and not off the internet, if you let your local independant know what your upto with it, they will look after you way better than any robert dyas or currys or net-refurb company will

I’m looking at professional/industrial models, but am not impressed with some of the reviews and comments I’ve found about Polti reliability from the home ironing business types. As my iron can be in as much use as these folks give them, I’m hoping for some more details on other makes.
I may need to try a pre-loved industrial type.

I (being the Himself referred to upthread) have found that the pump will deliver a trickle if not required to lift the water out of the container and through the filter. However, I think it is defunct, I’m guessing one or both of the valves have given up. I’m not having much success getting into the pump itself, but at this point I’ve nothing to lose by getting agricultural.
There is a relatively large amount of space in the body of the appliance and anything roughly the right size could be made to fit. This is a real long shot, and a bit cheeky, but does any reader know of a spare from another appliance that might fit? All risks are mine, of course, I’m just looking to see what might be found.
I’m not impressed with the design. The steam generator is basically a separate heating chamber, fed with water by said pump, flashing it into steam which then exits to the iron. No valves anywhere, other than in the pump, so no pressure being generated. Unimpressive
