ParticipantHi all
I have been looking at the above machine but am struggling to come up with a reason as to why it won’t heat, I will list what I have done below:-
Continuity test on heater (from board end of wiring) – 29.2 ohms.
Continuity test on NTC (from board end of wiring) – approx 18K ohms at room temp (about the correct value according to EMW).
Checked pressure switch – no leaks and contacts changing as expected when activated.
Sent Timer to EMW – Came back as no fault found.
Checked water valves – all 3.3-3.5K ohms.
Checked Motor continuity – all OK.
Checked door lock functionality – OK.
Checked drain pump functionality – OK.
Insulation test on heater – >550M ohms.
Insulation test on machine – 81M ohms.
Put heater in bucket of water and wired to mains – heats within 5 seconds to a point where the element is too hot to touch.
Put NTC in pan of hot water – dropped down to nearly 6K ohms before I took it out.
Tested all wiring continuity – no faults found.
Checked ambient room temp – 13 degrees C.
Put clamp on ammeter around live feed to heater – it kicks the heater in a couple of times for 2 or 3 minutes with about an 8A draw.Apparently this machine has been like it for nearly a year but the wife has only just succeeded in nagging the husband to get it sorted – he has changed the heater and NTC for a new one (all part numbers etc on the old one look the same as the one I had on the vehicle).
I can get this machine to do everything except heat up – even on the hottest program (95 degrees C) it leaves the water stone cold – I can’t remember but should this machine stop the dial in one position till it has heated or keep clicking every so many X seconds? Has anyone got any ideas of what else could cause this because I am completely stumped.
Thank you
Jem

From what you have said it still sounds like a control unit fault TBH. No fault found is not the same as no fault whatsoever. 😉
EMW are pretty good but the odd one with an intermittant fault may sneak through.
It should do short tumbles during the heating phase but not move on until temp is reached or until the NTC has registered no rise in temperature after just over 5 minutes.
I will send you some info. 🙂

Can’t remember for sure, but might there be an economy / energy save option button? Andy

The economy button does cut the heater out totally. Surely it couldn’t be that. 🙂

Had this problem on my sister in laws washing machine. Spent AGES on it trying to find the problem to find out she had the economy button selected!!!!

Yes I have seen that a few times before, worth double checking before fitting another control unit.

Surely Jem hasn’t overlooked the flippin’ economy button, not after all the trouble he’s been through so far on this job? 😉

Thank you for all the help/suggestions.
I hope that I haven’t overlooked the switch – I am sure that I looked at the front and made sure that there were none selected but it is always possible that I have made a mistake – I hope to make it back there tomorrow – I will be most annoyed if that is all that it is.

Never fear, many of us have overlooked that ruddy button. 😉

How much do they charge for a NFF? I never send anything unless they don’t have what I want in stock. They have my card details on file, I ring them up, they send a replacement which arrives next day. When all’s well I send exchange back. If fault isn’t cured, their part goes back. If it is a “funny” timer fault, you’d have been spared some of the aggravation doing it that way. (Although someone else might have ended up with a dodgy timer down the line.)

Does the machine go through the cycle or is the complaint ” dial will not move, prog sticks”?
If it goes through the cycle without sticking it sounds like economy selected.
If it sticks on wash cycle then its back to fault finding

I sent to EMW because I wasn’t expecting a timer fault when I first went to the job and it was just as quick to send it for test/repair as to order an exchange unit, the test fee is £5.87 for a NFF – if there is a fault and you get it repaired then the test fee is waived and you just pay for the exchange/repaired unit as normal. It costs no more or less to have a unit tested than it does to order and then return an exchange unit.
I was supposed to go back today to have another look but as our road is only passable by a 4×4 I think that it will have to wait.

I have an idea…. 💡
Why not ring your customer and ask if the economy switch has been activated? If so, advise switching it off and trying another wash load. 😀

This machine will complete a wash rinse & spin cycle even if it has a faulty heater or wiring 😉

Thank you all for your help, I finally got back to the machine today, it turns out that the economy switch had failed short circuit (if only I had tested it the first time I was there) :bang: , I have replaced it with a second hand one from a scrap machine and all is now well.
Jem 😀
