    Hi,
    A customer is complaining that her hob hotplates are not hot enough and don’t work all the time. One of our engineers has been there there twice and tested them and they work fine. Can someone recommend a thermometer for checking hotplate temperature. I found 2 infrared thermometer from BES for £56+VAT the temp range is only -18°C to 270°C/0°F to 518°F (switchable) and £82+vat -20 °C to 450 °C / 0°F to 840 °F

    Made by Kane international models INF150 INF200 (with laser sighting).

    Are these good and reliable?

    Advice appreciated.

    We use a couple of IR thermometers and they can vary with a wired probe a bit, so not the best but accurate enough for our work and what we use them for. Can’t remember the makes but both came from CPC.

    I’d say this was a customer education issue most likely though, not a fault. I mean it’s an element, it works or it doesn’t work! 😆

    Some customers are never educated! As its a DSS tenant they just want a new hob so they keep complaining that they can’t eat and we get the call to go and fix the hob.

    I have seen a thermometer in CPC for about £50 range from -20c to 550c might buy that and see how useful it is and maybe get a better one later on.

    For less than the cost of the tester you could have replaced both hotplates and the control switches….and saved on the second and subsequent visits. This eliminates the hotplates and puts the owness back to the customer, as kwatt says an element usually works or not, where there is doubt this removes it..

    Yep, I’d go along with that to be honest. Replace the rings, they only cost about a tenner each (if they are the solid plate type).

    I wouldn’t have a clue what the surface temperature would/should be of a fully heated hotplate.

    This eliminates the hotplates

    Depends on the type of plates fitted, if they are the standard four wire type wired to a six heat switch the plate has three elements inside and one can fail giving low output. If they are the type with red dot (quick heat) there is a thermostat built into the plate which can fail again giving low output. 🙁

    If the 145mm plate is a 1000w replace it with the 1500w type

    If the 180mm plate is a 1500w replace it with the 2000w type

    The extra heat produced will amaze your customer and stop all complaints 😀
