My wife has noticed that our ZWD1680 is causing small holes to appear in our clothes, not all the time but enough to be a major pain. I have checked the drum and it appears to be smooth. I also checked the lifters and they seem secure.

The only thing I noticed (and here is where the ignorance starts) was a bit of metal at the top of the seal (I think this might be related to the dryer vent). On the outside it is covered by a special bit of the seal but when I run my fingers inside this area, there are definitely some sharp bits of metal in that area.

Could this be causing the holes? If so, under what circumstances would clothes rub in that area. Would it be when the drum is overloaded or when the spin speed is too high.

    Thanks for your help, Pete.

Assuming the bearings are okay it’s almost always caused by either overloading the machine, or washing on an inappropriate cycle/spin speed – e.g. delicates on a cotton wash.

The metal is just the dryer duct, totally normal – clothes would never get there.

Thanks Chris, how does it happen then? I doubt it’s the cycle as it mainly happens to cottons, so I guess it’s overloading. Are the clothes being pushed into the holes in the drum? Do you recommend washer bags?

    Hi Pete,

There are a number of things but, one thing that has come up a lot recently is, shall we say, “lower quality” garments being washed on the wrong cycles causing this. We usually get it in the summer on light stuff.

    But, there’s more here

But odom is also correct, overloading is also a major culprit for this.
