I have a Smeg range cooker, SUK81MFX, which tripped out the MCB today.

The bottom element looks fine and the resistance is good.

The top oven/grill dual element looks quite ropey and the inner element has a 2 inch split in it. The top inner element still has a resistance of 18.8 ohms (outer element is 44.5 ohms) but I assume it is shorting out due to the split? I can see that it needs to be replaced but I just wanted to check that this is probably the problem (loss of powder insulator so inner wire touches outer casing….)

Thanks in advance for all advice.

It certainly sounds like the element has had it.

    Part number is probably 806890482.

A quick e-mail to the shop@ (on left hand side) should be able to confirm part number and give you a reasonable price.

What ever you try, always unplug/turn off at mains or isolator.

If you’re not sureyou can always get a professional from repairs@

    Good luck

    Thanks for your advice RocketMan.

The element has clearly had its day so I have ordered a new one. Hopefully that will sort it out, if not I’ll investigate further….
