How do you remove the handle of the freezer compartment door

Hi –
I have a Servis M7841 fridge and the handle of the freezer compartment door has cracked and split. It is still usable, but only just. It should be repairable with some strong glue, but I first have to remove the handle to do this.

The mechanism looks fairly standard (see links to images below), but if I try to lever out the catch it really looks like some part of the hinge or catch will snap before the handle is released.

Am I missing something here? Is there an easy way to remove and replace this handle without breaking them and having to fork out for new ones?
