I’ve searched through this great forum and found lots of advice about brush replacement being a common problem in old machines when they stop spinning.
Ours is a Bosch washing machine WFK 6010 GB/12 FD720400588 (I think; the GB could be G8, for instance)
To investigate if worn brushes are indeed the problem (seems quite likely given the noise we were getting before it stopped spinning, and given the sheer age), I’ve removed the back to access the motor.
However, the way it’s held in looks nothing like the examples in some of the youtube videos – in fact it looks very much more difficult to remove, with a green extension from the drum appearing to prevent movement of the motor in either direction. I also can’t find the 2 o’clock/8 o’clock entries for the brushes.
Is it possible this is a rare machine for which brush replacement is impossible?
Or should I be able to replace the brushes with the motor in situ?
Or am I being hopeless and I just need to undo lots of wires and bolts (at least one of which I seem to need to access from the inside) and pull things apart to get the motor out? eg maybe the motor comes out by dropping down?
The most obvious number on the motor is 3047605882.

I could post a photo if it would help.

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

    Regards

    Nick

It is possible to replace the brushes,I have never done it on this machine but the brushes are listed as part no140865 on the bosch site.

    Muchas gracias para tu consejo.
I will have a crack at getting the motor out. I guess worse case scenario is I order a new machine, which is probably what my wife prefers (though I’ve seen comments about the new machines being weaker due to plastic parts etc.).

Well, I managed to get the motor out. It was a bit more complex than the videos but I won’t bore you as it looks like it’s a rare configuration (unless anyone else has a wfk6010 and would like to know).

I can see where the brushes touch the coily thing but I’ve no idea how to get them out – it looks nothing like any of the videos (including the bosch one).
I’d love to post some photos but have no idea how to do so. Any hints?

    Thanks.[/img]

To post images you need to upload your photos to a free image hosting site.

Lots of them out there, Imageshack, Puttfile, Photobox etc.

When you have uploaded the photos you will then be presented with several options.

You can copy a direct link into your posts using the Img tags found above the message box which will show your picture in your post or copy a hyperlink to the photo.

Its really not that difficult. 8)

I think to change the brushes on this motor you will have to replace the brush ring part number 496871 .

This comes as the rear motor casting and contains the brushes, brush holders, TOC and motor plug.

The cost of this part is more than £50 so before you order it I would recommend you get the armature and windings tested.

    Dear iadom,
Thanks for explaining about the photo upload. I couldn’t seem to make the photo appear despite using img before the link, but I have a least got a functioning link below, I hope.

    Dear Twoten,

I fear you might be right about not being able to replace the brushes.
I’ve taken the motor apart, but the rear motor casting looks a bit different to 496871, lacking the extra bit of metal in one corner that 496871 has:

In fact, my motor looks more like this:

which is normally found in a range of different (but similar) machines.
Or maybe the extra bit of metal doesn’t make any difference?

    Thanks

Re: Bosch WFK 6010; possible to replace brushes?

The shape of the casting has changed, the brushes in the new casting fit in the same way s the brushes you have seen on youtube.

If you decide to order I would recommend giving the supplier the model number of the machine and let them determine the part number that way if there is any discrepancy the responsibility is the suppliers.

If you decide to get new brushes I would still strongly recommend having the motor tested for earth faults and the condition of the commutator checked first.

    Great. Thanks for this Twoten.
I have already used this website to try to find a local engineer (though no luck yet) since I can’t do the tests myself. 2 visits plus part(s) with no guarantee pushes me towards a new machine, but I’ll see what I’m quoted.

    Many thanks once again

    Nick
